Meat takes a back seat at WeHo city events

If you want meat at future City of West Hollywood events, you’re going to have to ask for it.

Food served at WeHo’s meetings and celebrations will now be plant-based by default thanks to a proposal by Vice Mayor Chelsea Lee Byers that was approved by City Council on Monday night.

“Instead of there being chicken Caesar salads, it’s a Caesar salad, and chicken can be on the side or not at all,” Byers explained. “And instead, we’re offering a number of sandwiches that are often chicken, salmon and then a plant-based. So, the idea here would be that the majority of those become plant-based. And I believe that people are coming to the event not asking, ‘What’s on the menu?’ but generally, ‘Is there food in the first place?'”

Councilmember Lauren Meister expressed some doubt about the practicality of the policy.

“To just go cold turkey — excuse the pun — and not include what we usually include, expecting people to call in and say, “Hey, I want my turkey sandwich,” I think would not really be fair,” said Meister, who suggested an education component be added to the proposal.

Byers said her aim with the initiative is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with food production and promote healthier eating habits.

This move is informed by data highlighting the significant environmental impact of the global food system. According to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization, the food system contributed to more than 30% of human GHG emissions in 2019, with animal-based products accounting for a substantial portion of these emissions. Plant-based foods, in contrast, typically require fewer resources and result in lower GHG emissions.

Similar initiatives in other jurisdictions, including New York City’s public hospitals and UCLA Health, have shown that offering plant-based foods can lead to reductions in both costs and carbon emissions, while also being well-received by the public.

This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard of. Is the satire? Let’s spend time on something else ffs.

As a vegan, I have no problem with this. The fewer animals who live a tortured life, only to be painfully murdered while in a state of terror, so their dead, tortured, antibiotic and hormone injected flesh, can stay on people’s mouths for 5 seconds, the better.

And all events must be ridden to on a bicycle. Otherwise “No soup for you.”

You nasty people really ought to pay attention better AND get a new life or a better target.

The agenda posted on the screen behind the CC members said, and I paraphrase: “𝙧𝙚𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙩-𝙗𝙖𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙛𝙤𝙤𝙙𝙨 𝙖𝙩 𝙘𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨.”

Chelsea Byers is an incompetent fool. Sucked her way into office by cozying up to the corrupt labor union.

We lived through slimy Shyne and and may survive Unethical Erickson, but Byers will be a new new low for our once-proud city.

Why do you say this?
Great idea, since she said it CAN BE ON THE SIDE.

We must get a grip on BigAg and lessen our use of beef, etc.

Slippery slope when small-town political hacks start legislating ideologies on a free-thinking people. There’s zero difference between ideological brain rot on the left, as seen with this bullying proposal, and ideological brain rot on the right, as seen with attempts to control what people do with their bodies. Zero difference. Neither extreme should be imposing their extreme ideological brain rot on society.

You are consistent. I generally agree, but this is not yet extreme.

Why worry about a future slippery slope situation when they are not banning meat? Just chill. Mr Strasburg and take it on the side.

Methane emissions are too high. Livestock, rice cultivation, landfills and sewage contribute more than half of human-caused methane pollution,

I call a slippery slope when a reasonable person can envision a future in which additional action will be foisted upon people. Byers continues to show herself as the most uncompromising toxic ideologue on West Hollywood city council. Hers is not an exercise in democracy, it is the poison of far-left fascism.

With all the problems facing the city I am so pleased that Cloud-based Chelsea decided to focus on the subject of the meetings’ catering. Why talk about housing when people are eating ham? Tofu, not taxes. Hemp, not the homeless. Maybe she can also have the city underwrite discount vegan Birkenstocks for all city residents. Cannot wait until she’s Mayor..

We don’t get food at our commission. Not a crumb. So this won’t affect us. Other events, I’m not sure of.

Anything Ms. Byers, this self-righteous political hack, would recommend to eat, I would throw in the garbage. She’s just another Woke looney joined at the hip with the pathetic Sepi Shyne and the repulsive clown Mayor Erickson.

I think Management and City Council should only be able to use their City credit cards at vegan restaurants. I suspect there would be a lot fewer meals charged to the tax payers if that was the mandate.

Truly disgusting move by a forth-rate hack. She seems bewildered most of the time. Probably needs more protein.

The bigger questions is, why is there food being served fast meetings and celebrations? More taxpayer money being wasted that could be paying more sheriffs.
