As the nation commemorates Victory in Europe Day, the Russian-speaking Advisory Board of West Hollywood is organizing a vibrant celebration to honor World War II veterans and the spirit of triumph. The event, titled “Victory Day Songs of WWII,” will take place on Sunday, May 5th, at 12 p.m. at Fiesta Hall, located at 1166 N Vista St, West Hollywood, CA 90046. Admission is free, and no reservations are required. Attendees can expect an afternoon filled with nostalgia, music, and heartfelt tributes.

Headlining the event is Helix Collective, a dynamic ensemble known for their innovative approach to classical chamber music. Teaming up with vocalist Alison Lewis, they will transport the audience back to the 1940s with a repertoire of beloved songs from the era. Alison Lewis, praised by Cabaret Scenes for her “hauntingly beautiful voice,” will lend her talent to breathe new life into classics that inspired hope and resilience during wartime.

The program will feature a selection of WWII songs representing various nations involved in the conflict. From the stirring “Le Chant de Partisans,” the anthem of the French Resistance, to the uplifting “Accentuate the Positive” from the United States, and the poignant “Katyusha” and “Dark is the Night” from the Soviet Union, attendees will experience a musical journey through history. Iconic tunes like “We’ll Meet Again” and “Run, Rabbit, Run” from the UK will also be part of the repertoire, stirring memories and emotions.

The celebration will commence with a special presentation at 11 a.m., honoring West Hollywood resident veterans of World War II. It’s a poignant moment to recognize and express gratitude for their sacrifice and service. Additionally, attendees are encouraged to dress in 1940s attire to fully immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the era.

Alison Lewis, a versatile artist with a diverse musical background, has captivated audiences across a range of genres, from world music to jazz, R&B, and classical. Her debut solo album, “Seven,” received widespread acclaim and charted in the top 40. Beyond her musical pursuits, Lewis is actively involved in community projects, including leading singing workshops for the Skid Row-based nonprofit, Urban Voices Project.

Nice! Excellent way to honor our veterans. Plus, it’s refreshing to see a WeHo event sans drag queens. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.)
