OPINION: Bigger ban on pet sales lacks fangs or purpose

Pet stores currently aren’t allowed to sell dogs, cats or rabbits in West Hollywood, but a proposal headed to City Council would widen the ban to include arachnids (spiders), birds, amphibians (frogs), reptiles and “other mammals.”

The proposal reminds us that puppy mills are bad, and that WeHo has built a reputation for protecting animal rights by banning the declawing of cats, the sale of fur and the sale of glue traps.

The irony is that West Hollywood only has one pet store — the Petco at 508 N. Doheny, which sells hamsters, mice, rats and some fish.

If the proposal passes, you’ll have to buy those creatures elsewhere.

We suggest the Petco at 8161 Beverly Boulevard, a mere 1.5 miles away in Los Angeles, where the laws aren’t changing.

You see, the only practical effect of this ban will be to push a tiny amount of sales (and tax revenue) out of WeHo into L.A., similar to the way higher minimum wages increased prices in West Hollywood and forced customers to go beyond the city limit in search of cheaper deals.

And what a targeted “fuck you” to Petco!

Alas, it’s not quite out of the blue.

The proposal was inspired by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles, a special interest group which had no trouble finding a fast-track in City Hall for this pointless idea.

I don’t need these fools telling me what and where I can buy my pet. Do these politicians ever do anything that’s actually important?

Idiotic. I got my leopard geckos from Petco and from the school hatching the eggs in Kindergarten. My son brought home a school one gecko and still alive at 30!years. The petco geckos for my daughter one died at 35 years old and the other still living at 32. Best experience for family and dad who kept them until they return from college. Thanks to Petco and all the needs for the geckos and selling the Leopard Spotted Geckos great pets and clean. Hey stupid people stay out of the Leopard geckos lives

Far left Progressives and their idiotic laws need to stop. If you don’t want one of these animals for a pet then don’t buy one. Stop telling everyone what they can and cannot do. This is exactly why we may end up with a convicted felon as our next president. People are tired of it. We have so many more important issues to deal with.

Gee, any surprise that this is a Chelsea Byers initiative? Unable to enact her intolerant brand of nannying elsewhere, Byers moved to West Hollywood five minutes ago because she knew it was an active Petri dish, but what she fails to comprehend is that West Hollywood is a 1.9 square mile dot in the middle of a major metropolis. Small-minded ideological bully who must be replaced. Rise up, West Hollywood! Take back our city! Be wary of others in her mold.

With both chewy.com and Amazon selling pet food that is delivered right to your front door, Petco is already having a hard time. Why does the city council want to give them an even harder time?

What about the rats on the city council? It seems like they can easily be bought.

Utterly ridiculous. Every damn special interest is the best friend to this pathetic and overreaching city council. Pretty soon, every business will be outlawed in Weho. Hell, let’s just shut down the city now and put it out of its misery.
