Mark Wahlberg’s clothing and apparel brand Municipal has opened its first permanent retail space in West Hollywood.
Wahlberg, as well as cofounder and CEO Harry Arnett, attended a ceremony Tuesday marking the opening of the store at 8609 Melrose Avenue. With a strong background in apparel and golf equipment, Arnett contributed significantly to the brand’s development four years ago. The 1,100-square-foot venue is designed with white walls, black fixtures, and a display that hints at future golf gear offerings.
Municipal’s foundation was laid when Wahlberg and Arnett met 15 years ago on a golf course in Carlsbad. Their collaboration was influenced by Wahlberg’s prior partnerships with major brands such as Nike and Adidas. Despite initial financial hurdles exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, Municipal secured additional funding to continue its operations, focusing on producing accessible, high-quality athletic apparel priced between $30 and $180.
The expansion into footwear came after Wahlberg acquired a stake in StreetTrend LLC, introducing the Origin sneaker last year with proprietary comfort technology and recently, a slider version. Plans for extending the sneaker line and launching all-terrain running shoes are in place.
Municipal’s product expansion includes a new grooming line, a women’s clothing line, and soon-to-be-released golf bags and eyewear by early 2025. The company is also planning a 6,000-square-foot concept store in Carlsbad with a coffee shop and community lounge, set to open this August.
Walberg’s prior contribution to WeHo’s economy was an iconic Calvin Klien underwear ad on the Sunset Strip in the late 90s. Good to see him back!
Don’t forget Wahlberger’s, the failed burger place in Sunset Plaza. If I recall, they were sued for stealing everything from the building owners when they closed but I never heard the outcome of all that.
