Doug Emhoff, husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, was attending a SoulCycle class with gay friends in West Hollywood’s Sunset Plaza on July 21 when he learned President Biden was dropping his re-election bid, putting his wife on a path to the presidency.
“We’re out there having coffee, messing around and talking,” Emhoff told the audience on a fundraising call for a group called ‘Black Gay and Queer Men for Harris.’ “And people are coming up to me, so it’s now, like, after the announcement has gone out, and my friend’s partner said, ‘Um, you need to look at this,’ and I said, ‘What?'”
It was Biden’s announcement that he was discontinuing his campaign for president.
Emhoff became the country’s first federal second gentleman when Biden was elected in 2020. Prior to that, he was an entertainment attorney. Emhoff and Harris wed in August 2014. The two maintain a home in Brentwood in addition to Number One Observatory Circle, the official home of the vice president in Washington, D.C.
