The legendary Greenblatt’s Deli and Fine Wines, which closed in 2021 after nearly a century in business, is set to return in a new form.
A project called the Greenroom has been approved to take over the former Greenblatt’s space near the Laugh Factory. Records show Jeffrey Kavin, who previously owned and operated Greenblatt’s, is behind the new venture.
The Greenroom will be a high-end restaurant and bar featuring 160 seats and operating daily from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. Construction is expected to last four months, with a planned opening by summer.
Greenblatt’s, established in 1926 by Herman Greenblatt and later run by the Kavin family, was famous for its Jewish deli specialties like pastrami sandwiches and matzo ball soup, along with an extensive wine selection. The deli was a favorite of stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando, Janis Joplin, and Billie Holiday. Halle Berry even praised it as her top deli in an interview with Esquire.
Get ready for $30 eggs and toast.
Why does everything have to be “High End”?
Because it’s the only way for businesses to survive in WeHo. Rents are high and labor costs are high. It’s simple economics. Just add up how much it costs to operate a restaurant these days. Every employee and there are many in a large restaurant costs at least $20/hour plus benefits, etc. If you have 15 people working a shift (waiters, busboys, cooks, etc, etc) that is at least $300/hour. Then add rent, insurance, taxes. Restaurants need to charge big bucks to cover all those expenses.
This is a very misleading headline. I got excited when I saw “Greenblatt’s” and “a new lease on life”, only to discover this isn’t the case.
I agree. The Greenblatt’s space has been empty since they closed. Just friggin’ re-open it!
