2024: The year in review, part II

Summer 2024 ended with some hard-to-believe news: that homelessness had dropped in L.A. County after years of increases.

The Weaver’s Walk street landscaping development on Melrose joined Hart Park as the battleground between fans and haters of synthetic turf.

Former Rent Stabilization Commissioner Zekiah Wright was kicked off the commission by Councilmember Sepi Shyne, allegedly for questioning the need to do UNITE HERE Local 11’s bidding. The already tumultuous summer got even more intense as Wright jumped into the City Council race at the last minute, got arrested, and then received the Chamber’s endorsement, only to come up short in the final votes.

Tod Hallman ended an extraordinarily lengthy stint as the chairman of the Public Safety Commission.

On Aug. 6, WeHo saw its only homicide of the year when a man was killed after a road rage altercation near the 7/11 on Santa Monica Blvd.

In September, the Plummer Park community gardens opened, finally giving gardeners a permanent place to grow their greens.

In one of the year’s most horrid crimes, a valet at Barney’s Beanery was beaten into critical condition by a transient male who was apprehended a month later.

A divided City Council gave the greenlight to the contentious Fountain Avenue bike lane project after months of public outrage and protests.

In November, Mayor Erickson was re-elected to City Council, along with newcomer Danny Hang, again proving UNITE HERE Local 11 remains the undisputed kingmaker of WeHo politics. Nathan Hochman toppled progressive district attorney George Gascon, Adam Schiff became a California senator and Laura Friedman became WeHo’s newest congresswoman.

The year ended with a celebration of West Hollywood’s 40 years of cityhood held at the Pacific Design Center, a packed affair that seemed to bring the disparate factions of WeHo back together again.
