The bacteria that causes meningitis is not as contagious as the common cold, but experts say it can be spread through coughing or kissing. People who contract the illness can suffer from fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, confusion and increased sensitivity to light.  The vaccine will not cure a meningitis infection but is likely to prevent one from becoming infected.

Concern about meningitis arose after 33 year-old West Hollywood resident Brett Shaad was diagnosed with the infection. Shaad’s family removed him from life support Saturday.
