An HIV/AIDS information center and national AIDS monument are coming to WeHo.
A fundraiser and panel discussion on Wednesday, April 24 will raise money for both the construction of the Dr. Michael Gottlieb HIV/AIDS Information Center, which will be an extension of the West Hollywood Library and will provide the public with programs and materials on the HIV/AIDS disease, and the Foundation for a National AIDS Monument, which will pay tribute to the people and organizations whose efforts reduced the plague to a manageable, chronic disease.
Gottlieb, who diagnosed the first case of HIV/AIDS in 1981 and has since worked with those infected around the world, will speak at a panel discussion at the West Hollywood Council Chambers, 625 N. San Vicente Blvd. at Melrose. The panel, starting at 8 p.m., will also include HIV expert Dr. David Hardy, ACT UP founder Jim Eigo and Councilmember John Duran.
At 6:15 p.m., there will be a screening of the Academy Award-winning documentary “How to Survive a Plague,” which follows the early activism of ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) and TAG (Treatment Action Group) as they put pressure on the pharmaceutical industry to make an effective AIDS drug available.
