“Everything Loose Will Land,” the latest exhibition in the Getty initiative “Pacific Standard Time Presents: Modern Architecture in L.A.,” opens Wednesday (May 8) at the MAK Center in West Hollywood’s Schindler House.
The exhibit, which will focus on the art and architecture of 1970s L.A., is named after a famous quote from Frank Lloyd Wright: “Tip the world over on its side and everything loose will land in Los Angeles.”
The 1970s were a time when art and architecture broke from traditional boundaries. Artists created works with architecture-like qualities, architects created objects that could be shown in galleries and each fed off the creativity of the other.
Additionally, work in 70s L.A. was shaped by social upheavals, such as the civil rights and feminist movement, and the environmental crisis caused by smog.
