Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa kicked off Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Heritage Month with opening ceremonies on the south lawn of Los Angeles city hall at 200 N. Spring St. on Thursday night. The evening marked the start of a month-long lighting of the historic building in lavender in support of LGBT equality, and the third annual LGBT Heritage Month in Los Angeles.

On Friday (May 31), Villaraigosa and the LA City Council will present the Hope, Dream and Spirit of Los Angeles Awards to openly gay recording artist Adam Lambert, community activist Mia Yamamoto and president of Christopher Street West/PRIDE Rodney Scott at 10 a.m. in LA city hall’s council chambers at 200 N. Spring St., Los Angeles.

LGBT Heritage Month is a month-long series of events taking place City-wide. A list of scheduled events can be found online.

Thursday’s kick-off celebration included entertainment by Doug Spearman, the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles and Katrina Parker of “The Voice.”
