proposition 8, same-sex marriageThe Campaign,” a documentary that chronicles the movement in defense of same-sex marriage, will premiere at 9 p.m. on Tuesday (July 25) on KCET.

The broadcast comes as a decision on the constitutionality of California’s Proposition 8 ban on same-sex marriage is expected from the U.S. Supreme Court by the end of this month. Following the broadcast, director Christie Herring and producer Marc Smolowitz will participate in a Google Hangout, fielding questions from viewers, starting at 10 p.m.

“For the first time on television, we’re excited to share this powerful film with our passionate and engaged Southern California viewers,” said Bohdan Zachary, vice president of broadcast, syndication and production, KCETLink. “We recognized the timeliness and significance of this story and wanted to showcase the origins of a movement that catapulted the largest social issue campaign in recent American history.”

“KCET was a natural selection for the television debut of The Campaign,” Zachary said. “The Southern California LGBT community has played an active role in this debate; we wanted to provide viewers with the opportunity to watch the film in tandem with the U.S. Supreme Court’s forthcoming decision.”

The filmmakers had exclusive access to the statewide headquarters of “No on 8,” the campaign against the proposition. Their film tracks gay men and lesbians through emotional battles to protect their families, rights and dignity. They learn that growing social acceptance does not always translate into votes, but that participating in the political process transforms them – win or lose. California voters approved the proposition in November 2008 by a 52 to 48 percent margin.

More information about the film, on how to join the Google Hangout or to view the trailer is available online.
