Hooray for Marriage! (But What about Divorce, Kids, Taxes and the Evils of Assimilation?)

divorceASSIMILATION? Thousands of LGBT people in California cheered the U.S. Supreme Court decision that invalidated Proposition 8, the 2008 ban on same-sex marriage in California. But there is a minority in the LGBT community that argues that same-sex marriage isn’t a good thing. The San Francisco Weekly takes a look at Against Equality, the LGBT group with an in-your-face name, and its argument that we shouldn’t be rejoicing.

DIVORCE. The focus thus far this has been on same-sex marriage, what with the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision that invalidated Proposition 8, the anti-gay marriage law in California, and its decision rejecting the federal Defense of Marriage Act. Some same-sex couples though are hoping that the decisions may open the door not to marriage, but to divorce, which has become difficult for same-sex couples to achieve. The New York Times explains why.

TAX PREPARERS. While they may take some personal joy in last week’s U.S Supreme Court decisions that boosted same-sex marriage rights, accountants and tax preparers also have reason to lament the decisions. KPCC’s Off Ramp explains.

ETIQUETTE. Is a second marriage ceremony “tacky” if the State of California earlier invalidated your first one? Is it polite to ask same-sex couples now if they plan to marry soon? If you gifted a same-sex couple at a commitment ceremony (when marriage wasn’t legal) should you cough up another gift for the wedding? The New York Times (likely the nation’s  queerest daily newspaper) offers some answers.

KIDS? SOON? So now that you guys have husbands, you’ll soon be confronted with a question (likely from Mom) that heterosexual newlyweds always encounter. (No one said this would be easy!)
