Mister is the mobile version of Daddyhunt.com, a site launched in 2003 by Christopher Turner, a San Francisco media entrepreneur who is the husband of famed writer Armisted Maupin (“Tales of the City,” etc.), and Carl Sandler. Carl, a New York City resident, who has worked at Gay.com now owns Daddyhunt, in December of last year launched Misterapp.com and the actual Mister app in an apparent attempt to rebrand Daddyhunt (Misterapp.com takes you to the Daddyhunt site with a Mister logo).
Sandler has described the app as a tool for guys over 30 who are looking for more than a quick hookup and don’t want to converse with “evil twinks,” who Mister has hilariously defined in an online video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3exr7J7m-c. The site posts a Mister Code that asks its members to treat one another with respect and honesty.
Mister offers some of the standard criteria for characterizing yourself when you create a profile (i.e. build, relationship status, height). However, like Scruff, it also offers a menu for those who are hot for hairy, with options including Smooth, Shaved, Trimmed, Some Body Hair, Hairy and Tons of Hair. Oddly Mister doesn’t have an option for stating your weight, although the “A Little Extra,” “Bear” and “Big Guy” options in the Build category hint at that. And it doesn’t have an option for stating your HIV status.
Mister lets you add up to 10 photos to your profile free of charge. The premium version ($9.99 a month) let’s you upload 25. Three of your pics can be “public” photos viewable by anyone who checks your profile. Another seven can be put in a “private” gallery that can be viewed only someone you open that gallery for.
Mister offers two broad options: Global, where Mister automatically serves up a portfolio of pictures of guys from around the world, and Local, which delivered 210 profiles for premium subscribers within a two-mile radius of our WeHo reviewer. You can choose to search by distance or by most recent login, which can turn up guys 20 miles away from West Hollywood. Like Scruff and Growlr but not Grindr, Mister also lets you search by neighborhood or city, which means a WeHo guys can look for guys in Pasadena.
Mister lets you “like” a profile and list a profile as a “favorite,” with the distinction not entirely clear, although the person you “like” gets a message to that effect. Rather than a simple “woof” message option, Mister lets you send any of six messages, including Handsome, Burning Hot, Great Smile, Dateable, Inspiring and Funny. Mister also offers a “MR. Right” feature where every 24 hours you can click to have Mister present various local profiles to you. You get to choose one of three options: “Like,” “Not Quite Right,” and “Unsure.” There’s no learning in that application, so even if you consistently choose “Not Quite Right” for heavily tattooed guys with nose rings, you still might see them the next time around. Mister has fixed its Block system. In the past, if your best friend or office mate “blocked” you on the app, you could still see his picture. If you clicked on it, you’d find that you’ve been blocked, which raised all sorts of unpleasant questions. Now you can hide from those who you don’t want in your online life without fear of offending.
In addition to the fun you might have with the app, Mister has produced some YouTube videos to market the app that are sure to spark a laugh or a sigh.
