WeHo City Clerk Corey Schaffer to Step Down for Move to New York City

West Hollywood City Clerk Corey Schaffer is stepping down at the end of the year to move to New York City. Schaffer was named to the position in 2011 to replace Tom West, who retired. Previously Schaffer had served as assistant city clerk for six years.

The city clerk, who reports directly to City Manager Paul Arevalo, is responsible for overseeing city elections, drafting codes and overseeing commissions and boards. The city clerk also produces City Council meeting agenda.

Schaffer is leaving the position to move to New York City with his husband, who has accepted a job there.

“It was a tremendously difficult decision because it’s an amazing place, Schaffer said in an email to WEHOville. “I lived in Weho for a long time, and it was wonderful, and I’ve worked at City Hall for 11 years and loved my time here very much. The city manager and City Council have been incredibly supportive of me as an employee and as a person and I have nothing but wonderful things to say about them and the staff at City Hall.

“I leave hopeful that my time here has been productive, and that I’ve made City Hall a little better for the residents, and for city staff.”

Arevalo said that Schaffer would be missed. He noted that he started out working as a receptionist on the third floor of City Hall. “We really watched him grow as a leader in the organization and as a professional,” Arevalo said. “On the other hand, you have to follow your dream.”

Arevalo noted that Schaffer has worked especially hard this year. “He led us through the challenge of marriages (West Hollywood responded quickly to the legalization of gay marriage in California by offering marriage services to LGBT couple) and the election. He’s really going to be missed.”
