A Tea Party activist in San Diego has called for a boycott of the Rose Parade because it will feature a float promoting gay marriage.

Karen L. Grube created a Facebook page to promote the boycott which by 10 a.m. Saturday already had attracted 1,038 “likes,” a measure of its popularity.

The float is sponsored by AIDS Healthcare Foundation and will feature a live wedding between Aubrey Loots, 42, and Danny Leclair, 45, a Los Angeles couple who have been dating for 10 years. The ceremony will promote AHF’s “Love is the Best Protection” campaign, which argues that monogamous gay marriage would result in a decline in the incidence of HIV/AIDS.

“For that couple, it’s a dream come true. Yes, but not for the 30 states that they’re throwing this to and not for the people who voted against it,” Grube said in an interview with ABC 10 News. Grube’s reference is to the 32 states that still don’t permit same-sex marriages, which are legal in California.

Grube is calling on people to boycott the parade, which is televised and expected to attract 68 million viewers from around the world, and to boycott parade sponsors.

Rose Parade officials have said they welcome the float and the wedding.

Grube has said her objection is not based on her religious beliefs but on her belief that the wedding will be a “political act” and no weddings, gay or straight, should be staged during the parade.

However on various websites Grube is a frequent commenter against same-sex marriage. She describes herself as a “freelance paralegal” and is a graduate of the Point Loma University of the Nazarene, a San Diego Bible college established by an evangelical Christian denomination that strongly opposes homosexuality. “We view all forms of sexual intimacy that occur outside the covenant of heterosexual marriage as sinful distortions of the holiness and beauty God intended for it,” the church says in a public posting of its doctrine.

Aw c’mon, db, they’re just being good, God-fearing Christians. Exemplary ones, in fact. How very decent they are, cloaked in their tightly woven webs of moral superiority and gratuitous condescension, clustering tightly together with people of their own ilk to justify their bigotry and intolerance of those who aren’t fortunate enough to bask in the healing lovelight of their blessed faith, the one true faith, as they magnanimously shower pity on the morally bereft, hell-bound masses as if it were manna from heaven. Oh, did I mention? It’s 2014, and Pity is the new Hate. And Dona, God just did… Read more »

These men should pretend not to be gay and then marry your daughters, Joe & Dona. I’d watch that on live TV!

Disgusting! I will not watch and will boycott all sponsors. I am so sick of having this disgusting perversion treated as if it was not the abomination the Bible says it is. God help this country!

Leave politics out of this once beautiful event. My whole family will no longer be watching this parade, sadly, after 25 yrs of doing so

These people are sad and yet while I was beyond proud to see AHF in Pasadena’s Rose Parade the past couple years, this one for 2014 is silly. Into this scourge for over 30 years and this compassionate AIDS organization has run out of ideas about the loss and devastation we have seen? Can’t come up with a tribute beyond Elizabeth Taylor? Shame on you! AHF has stolen the vaulted and hard-won marriage message and hoodwinked it into marriage=monogamy so therefore marriage prevents AIDS. Really? Come on. Perhaps people who finally have won the right to marry will be monogamous,… Read more »
