Attorney and women’s rights advocate Sandra Fluke, who had been considering a bid to replace retiring Rep. Henry Waxman, announced today she will instead seek the 26th District state Senate seat.
“I believe that the families and communities of this district — from West Hollywood to West L.A. and from Santa Monica to Torrance and beyond –deserve to have a fresh perspective from a new generation of progressive leadership in Sacramento, and I am eager to get to work fighting for the causes that matter most to our future as a community, state and nation,” Fluke said.
Fluke gained fame when she told Congress in 2012 that birth control should be covered under the Affordable Care Act — and in response was called a “slut” by radio host Rush Limbaugh. She had filed paperwork seeking the California Democratic Party’s endorsement for Waxman’s seat, but had not officially thrown her hat into the ring.
By entering the state Senate race, she will look to replace Sen. Ted Lieu, D-Torrance, who is running for Waxman’s post. Rep. Janice Hahn, D-San Pedro, was among those throwing her support behind Fluke’s Senate bid.
“Although I would have loved to have her as a colleague in Congress, the people of the 26th Senate District will be lucky to have Sandra fighting for them,” Hahn said.
Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi, D-Torrance, and former Assemblywoman Betsy Butler are among those believed to be considering a run for the state Senate seat.
I asked a friend earlier this evening how much his fiancee, who does not have health insurance, pays for her birth control pills. He wasn’t sure exactly, but he knew it wasn’t as much as $15.
A woman needs only one pill a day, so why did Fluke say women need a thousand (or three) for birth control?
I don’t know by what standard you go to say California is moving full steam ahead, but that’s another matter. I also watched Fluke speak at the 2012 DNC. I guess she said what you want to hear.
BEB, $10/$15 for birth control is insurance subsidized. The true cost is going to be 4 to 5 times more. If you don’t have insurance it can be very costly and that is why she was supporting the birth control provision in Obamacare. In which Rush called her a slut and wanted more pills because she was having so much sex; that is not how birth control works, he was thinking of oxy-cotin, which he is more familiar with. I wasn’t supporting anything Rush said; I was correcting the record. I don’t listen to Rush, but I do know that almost anything outrageous he is supposed to have said, he almost for sure didn’t say. There are an awful lot of bloggers and commentators who have their own agenda who misreport, and people like you believe what they say. And Politifact is widely known for lazy reporting. I’m stunned that Rush has been cited in this string as a point in an argument in support of an opinion. Fluke said on average $1,000/year was needed. Although a high estimate, it’s not a lie like almost everything out of Rush’s mouth. What was it he said about gays? And the cost of unintended pregnancies also have a cost on society that other citizens pay for. Keep that in mind before you voice your support for Rush and his ilk.
Rush was responding to Fluke’s statements that she needed thousands of dollars a year for birth control. Rush wondered why one pill a day wasn’t sufficient. What kind of sexual activity must she engage in that it would take thousands a year (provided by the government, or more specifically, you and me) to protect her from the consequences of her very active sex life? How does she find the time for anything else?

well, after all, turns out Ms. Fluke will set her sights a bit lower. must be that Ms. Gravitas won’t be able to scare up enough campaign and condom cash to float her bid for DC. The race for Zev’s seat is full of candidates indeed. The Hollywood Reporter did a great piece on it in today’s issue. Not everyone was mentioned though.
