Col. Margarethe (Grethe) Cammermeyer, the highest-ranking military official to come out while in the service, will make an appearance in West Hollywood on Saturday.
The city and the June L. Mazer Lesbian Archives will co-host a discussion with Cammermeyer from 3 to 5 p.m., followed by a 5:30 p.m. screening of Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story. The event will take at West Hollywood Park Auditorium, 647 N. San Vicente Blvd. between Melrose and Santa Monica.
As a colonel in the Washington National Guard, Cammermeyer disclosed that she was a lesbian and was discharged in 1992. She successfully sued and returned to the National Guard. She was one of the few openly gay or lesbian people in the military under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
There is a $10 suggested donation, with proceeds going to the June L. Mazer Lesbian Archives.
I served during Viet Nam and knew openly gay servicemen both in the enlisted ranks and officers. The company clerk made Jack on “Will & Grace”‘ look like a truck driver. DADT was the so called answer to allow gays to serve. It was nothing more than a anti-gay law brought to us by the so called pro gay democratic party.
Let’s look at the history of DADT. The Democrats passed it. It was challenged in court by a Republican organization and declared unconstitutional. The ruling was appealed by the so called pro gay Obama Administration.
