West Hollywood voter turnout for Tuesday’s primary election was even worse than usual. Only 14 percent of registered voters went to the polls, compared to 20 percent who voted in the 2013 City Council election. Thirty seven of L.A. County’s 88 municipalities had higher voter turnouts.
But those in West Hollywood who did vote backed the winners. City Councilmember Jeffrey Prang, who is facing L.A. County prosecutor John Morris in the November general election, was the top vote getter in West Hollywood and in the county as a whole. In a race with 12 candidates, Prang also was the leading candidate in Beverly Hills and Santa Monica on the west side. He had a major lead in Burbank and in unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. Other cities where he was the top vote getter were Carson, Corvina, Culver City, Downey, Gardena, La Canada Flintridge, La Verne, Lancaster, Lawndale, Los Angeles, Palmdale, Westlake Village and Whittier.
In the race for the 3rd District seat on the L.A. County Board of Supervisors, former state legislator Sheila Kuehl was the leading vote getter in West Hollywood. Kuehl, one of seven candidates, will face former Santa Monica Mayor Bobby Shriver in the November election. She took 38 percent of the WeHo vote. West Hollywood City Councilmember John Duran ran second, with 24 percent of the votes, followed by Shriver, who took 16 percent.
West Hollywood voters also cast a majority of their votes for Jerry Brown for governor, Gavin Newsom for lieutenant governor, Alex Padilla for secretary of state, John Change for state treasureer, Kamala Harris for state attorney general, Dave Jones for insurance commissioner, Adam Schiff for the 28th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives and Betsy Butler for the state Senate’s 26th District seat. West Hollywood resident Sandra Fluke was a close second to Ben Allen and will face him in the November general election. Richard Bloom took the majority of WeHo votes in the race for the 50th District seat in the state Assembly. Jim McDonald was the leading West Hollywood vote getter in the race for sheriff, where he will face Paul Tanaka in November.

This publication is terribly downplaying Shriver. He served TWICE as Mayor pro-tem, and was TWO-TERM SM CITY COUNCIL MEMBER. He’s a brilliant businessman & entrepreneur & raised tens of millions for aids, resulting in saving tens of millions of dollars & lives. Duran is WH City Council Member & Zev Yarsoslavsky, served as a City Council Member prior to advancing to LA County Supervisor, which is a natural progression. Your percentages are off. Kuehl got about 34.9%/Shriver 29.8%, Duran 14.96. With LGBT supporters, Kuehl’s edge is par for the course for low turnout primaries. Shriver raised tens of millions for aids relief, resulting in saving endless lives. Kuehl took patients out of ICU for nurse-to-patient ratio, now they’re on the floor with drips, lines & iv’s.
The latest results posted on the Los Angeles County Registrar’s website are Kuehl with 30 percent, Shriver with 25 percent and Duran with 14 percent.
