El Tovar and RobertsonUPDATE: This story has been updated to reflect new information from the sheriff’s department. (Last updated at 3:20 p.m. on 8/7.)

Two men have been arrested in connection with a hit and run that took place early this morning, when a driver hit two people, a man and a woman, as he exited El Tovar Place at Robertson Boulevard. Both were taken to Cedars-Sinai Hospital. The woman remains in critical condition. The man, whose injuries were less severe, has been released.

According to an e-mailed statement from the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station, deputies were called to the scene at about 2 a.m. Thursday.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that 29 year-old Hector Hernandez, a resident of Whittier, and 23 year-old Joseph Osuna from Bakersfield, were involved in a verbal altercation with two women in a private parking lot,” the statement said. “Osuna, for unknown reasons, began hitting both women with a his belt before entering a car being driven by Hernandez. As Hernandez and Osuna fled the scene, witness accounts stated another woman and another man, who were not involved in the altercation, were intentionally run over …

“The two women assaulted with the belt sustained non-life threatening injuries. Although one was treated at the scene, the other was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The two other victims who were run over were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The woman is currently listed in critical condition and the man was treated and released.”

Hernandez was arrested and booked on assault with a deadly weapon and driving under the influence charges. He is being held in lieu of $40,000 bail. Osuna was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and is being held in lieu of $30,000 bail, according to the sheriff’s department.

Jesse K – I fear you missed my point. I responding to an earlier comment from someone who blamed the WeHo sheriff’s dept for his assault and death, which is indeed horrible and tragic. But this happened in LA, not WeHo, so the blame he placed on the sheriff’s dept was misplaced.

Not sure why that is so hard to understand. Are you suggesting the LA Co Sheriff’s dept based in WeHo is responsible for gay men’s safety once they leave WeHo?

Chris Nowhere in my point do I blame anyone. I only ask why can we not do and expect better from our city and its service providers. I support the Sheriffs dept 100% percent. I support our city 100% are they perfect ? NO… Am I ?.. NO… Are you ? NO. Will I continue to question some of the things they do ? Yes !! Thats our rights as citizens. We Should all always at least try to better the lives of those around us as well as our own. If we say nothing then they do nothing to… Read more »

Jess, who said these guys were gay? They initially started attacking women, probably because they tried to ignore them. Sounds like a couple of straight thugs looking to cause trouble.

Randy Matthews Try living down the street from the House of Blues. According to the city they can do no wrong. I can only guess it’s because they have hosted numerous Obama fund raisers which by they selves are a pain in the ass to the residents in the area. Although it has not been every night as of late , there are still drunks walking down Olive Dr. yelling at one another, vandalising property, and sometimes fighting. It’s not uncommon to look up the hill and see flashing red lights outside the club. It’s funny but those leaving Barney’s Beanery… Read more »

West Hollywood attracts people from “out of town” because they cannot be gay in their own neighborhoods, so they come to WeHo, Get Drunk, and hurt people. ” 29 year-old Hector Hernandez, a resident of Whittier, and 23 year-old Joseph Osuna from Bakersfield”. The West Hollywood Sheriff’s need to be out in full force, sobriety check points at different places and let it clearly be understood drunk driving will not be tolerated. The check points have to be moveable. As people go on social media and warn people. Driving drunk is not good for anyone, especially the VICTIMS!

Chris Sanger the man had left a West Hollywood bar, the Gold Coast, and was on his way home, maybe his street is in Los Angeles, but it does not negate the fact he was brutalized and MURDERED.

Jonathan, for some reason Chris Sanger is really hung up and defensive about the location of the. Man beaten to death one block east of the West Hollywood sheriff’s jurisdiction. if you would like to read how safe he feels here and his faith in the sheriff’s dept (including his defense of their revenue generating jaywalking ticket habits, you can do so in the comments of the story about the death of the aforementioned beating victim (mind you, a Los Angeles resident by a few blocks).

I believe the problem is that the culture of that part of West Hollywood is changing, with the type of people that now frequent the Abbey, Pump, etc.. I lived on Larrabee for 5 years. I remember that most incidents like these happened up on Sunset Blvd., not down in the gay part of Santa Monica Blvd.. The aren’t just drunken idiots, but people who express rage after drinking. Mean drunks, who act violent after too much alcohol. Once again, I believe these incidents are on the up-rise because we have a different crowd visiting that part of town. We… Read more »

My, chappies – you sure can pick some nits. There ARE lots of watering holes in that area. I am a tad flummoxed by the two men ass-whupping the two women because I am not aware of any mixed bars in the locale. Assuming the drivers and whuppers were indeed inebriated – they could have driven to the area already drunk. The combined assaults by the guys on the women and the hit and run aspect suggests me these were not locale folks. But I have to concur with Jonathan. WeHo makes some amazingly stupid decisions about important stuff that… Read more »

Matt, Turning Robertson into a pedestrian plaza sounds like a good idea but only at night. It is the end of a major therefore and there are businesses on it that depend on vehicle access during the day. I believe however it was tried out about a year ago and I’m not sure why the closure was discontinued. On another note, while everyone enjoys the diversity of the different bars it seems to me especially in the area of Santa Monica and Robertson it’s a saturated area. Starting with the Abby, then HERE, followed by the new bar, then Motherlode… Read more »

Jonathan – for the record (since your point was related to WeHo and what the city and the Sheriff can do), the tragic case of the death of the bar patron occurred in Los Angeles, not West Hollywood, as he was on his way home.

The greater point that these awful events can occur in even safe places like and around WeHo is of course true, but the actual location of that one wasn’t WeHo.

Chris Ok so he didn’t die in WEHO that one doesnt count forget about him !! Not right … He was FOUND in LA to be clear He left a bar in weho and to me I still care. Not to mention the many stories I hear of men being followed on the streets here and several beatings over the last few years There are many accounts we never hear about and are not part of the stats. I sat in a public safety meeting after criticizing Then Mayor prang over a year ago for stating that “there is really… Read more »
