A woman was hit by a car last night while in a crosswalk on Santa Monica Boulevard at Hayworth Avenue near Baby Blues restaurant.

west hollywood crosswalk, santa monica boulevardLt. William Nash of the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station said the driver of the vehicle fled the scene and that sheriff’s deputies are looking for him. Nash said the accident occurred at bout 1 a.m. today. The woman suffered trauma to her head and was treated on the scene by the L.A. County Fire Department. She was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Nash said, and is expected to recover.

In response to a rash of vehicle collisions with pedestrians last year, West Hollywood appropriated $1.4 million to implement a crosswalk safety campaign.

The campaign has included a public safety campaign reminding pedestrians to be observant when crossing the street, the installation of lighted signs warning and signs between lanes to warn vehicles approaching crosswalks and raised pavement markers. The city plans to install stop lights synchronized with traffic lights at major crosswalks such as that on Santa Monica Boulevard at Westmount.

I was crossing at a crosswalk at West Knoll and Santa Monica and almost got hit by a car last week. All cars stopped for me, the lights were flashing and I looked both ways before crossing but a jerk in a BMW tried to go around the stopped cars and almost hit me. The signs alerting drivers that it is STATE LAW to yield to pedestrians, flashing lights and the road bumps has helped a bit, but there will still be those who will choose not to follow the law because they feel they are above it. Weho Sheriffs… Read more »

I have found especially at night that these new signs between lanes just prior to a crosswalk are more of a distraction than valid information. I admit I have failed to yeld to a pedestrian because my attention was directed as to passing one of these signs without hitting it than the crosswalk they were intended to alert me to watch.

I just RE READ this article. Above it says they old a 1.4 million safer walk campaign …what for? Those idiots that DON’T use the cross walks are suicidal, late on the rent and don’t have good judgement. Lets use that $ on pet parks at the new park. Anyone living in this Party city should know when to cross or cross dress!!

Again, from what I saw she was not in the crosswalk. She was lying in the street a couple of feet south of Santa Monica Bl. in the intersection next to the 7-11. The crosswalk is about 15 to 20 feet west of where she was.

For many persons with sight or mobility disabilities (crutches, walkers, wheelchairs, etc) being forced to hobble an extra block or two IS a big deal. While too many pedestrians are indeed at fault (inebriation, inattentiveness, and carelessness), too many drivers are also guilty of same–or impatience or outright rude recklessness. As noted, median trees, landscaping and inadequate lighting don’t help matters. The new mid-street warning signs do serve to better alert drivers to the presence of mid-block crosswalks, but as other readers here note, they do indeed also pull eyes to the signs…and away from approaching pedestrians. Flashing lights such… Read more »

As long as the uncontrolled crosswalks are there, people will use them. They are now clearly marked, and I don’t think its a good stance to tell people “to just not use them.” Because they will. They are there. Either change them to red-light controlled crosswalks (or pedestrian bridges), or if they are going to leave them as-is, do what they can to make drivers and pedestrians both pay more attention. I personally think there are too many of them. I don’t agree that they should all be eliminated, but reduced in number, and installation of red lights for the… Read more »

I walk some part of the area between LaCienega and Robertson every day, and I don’t think I have ever used those crosswalks …… not even once. I cross at the intersections and I don’t find it to be a hardship at all. I hate the idea of interrupting the flow of traffic and I don’t feel entitled to do so. I love that WeHo is a walking city, but I think there is a limit to how much we walkers should expect to be accommodated. If lights like those on Fairfax are installed, it is going to be ugly.… Read more »

While driving east on Santa Monica Bl. approaching La Brea it occured to me that there is no crosswalk adjacent to the street on the north side of Santa Monica between Formosa and La Brea for people crossing the street to the Gateway. The block between Formosa and La Brea on the south side is far longer than the one by 24 Hour Fitness/Starbucks. Are we to believe the muscle boys are unable to walk the short block to the traffic light while the rest of have to walk twice as far.

Larry – what exactly are they studying? It’s a failure – no analysis needs to be done and this is typical bureaucratic red tape. You already have my vote via absentee, so I hope you can get them to stop wasting time and money on a study when either installing traffic lights (like they have on Fairfax), restricting crossing to intersections, or building pedestrian overpasses are the only way to make this work. Clearly, this is a political issue for members of the council, just like keeping Alta Vista and Westmount closed to through traffic despite gridlock traffic continues.
