The website of a West Hollywood furniture and home accessories store has been hacked by someone claiming to be associated with an Islamic terrorist organization.
KABC 7 television reported tonight that Olga Rechdoun, founder and owner of Duroque, discovered this weekend that the home page of her store’s website carried the words “Hacked by Islamic State (ISIS). We are everywhere. :)” ISIS, the Islamic State of Iraq and ash-Sham (also known as ISIL, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) has been designated by the United Nations and a number of countries, including the United States, as a terrorist organization.
The Duroque site was back in operation Sunday night, with the apparent ISIS propaganda message gone. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has been investigating a number of similar hacks of websites across the Western United States. Evan Kohlmann of Flashpoint Intelligence, a global security firm, told NBC that the hackers don’t appear to have any real connection with ISIS. “These defacements have taken place amid a spate of recent attacks where ordinary hackers have cynically used far-fetched references to ISIS as a means of attracting media attention,” Kohlman said.
The FBI released a statement saying: “We’re aware of these reported intrusions here and elsewhere but we’re not commenting on specific cases under review. Anyone who is victimized with a similar intrusion should contact the FBI.”
Ray Galan, who manages the Duroque website, told KABC 7 that he had been shocked to see the hack. “Personally, I think it might be somebody pretending to be ISIS to try to scare the business,” he said.”
Duroque is located at 634 ½ N. Robertson Blvd. in the West Hollywood Design District.
