The second annual Latin@ Queer Arts & Film Festival (LQAFF), presented by the Los Angeles LGBT Center, will take place April 16 through April 19,at the Center’s Renberg Theatre and The Village at Ed Gould Plaza located at 1125 N. McCadden Place in Hollywood.
The 2015 program includes a short films program, feature length films, digital media, art installations and musical performances that represent the intersections and complexities of Latina/o queerness through arts and culture. The four-day celebration will include red carpet events, receptions, music, Q&As with filmmakers and featured cast members, and workshops. Films selected to screen at the LQAFF will be shown out of competition.
LQAFF is dedicated to showcasing the stories of queer, trans, two-spirited, Latina/o identities through film and the visual arts in a space that builds on the rich and diverse Latin cultural Lhistory. The festival also is made possible by support from Councilman Mitch O’Farrell (L.A. City Council District 13) and contributions from GLAAD and Self-Help Graphics.
Film screenings will include “Cuatro Lunas” on April 17 at 8 p.m. at the Renberg Theatre. “Cuatro Lunas” is a Mexican film that features four stories of love and disgust between men of different generations facing their conflicts and fears. In attendance will be associate producer Fernando Licon and Alejandro Belmonte, the lead actor in the film. A Q&A with filmmakers and a reception will follow the screening.
On April 19 there will be a screening of “Vestido de Novia,” a Cuban film, at a time still to be determined. The director, Marilyn Solaya, reflects on Cuba during the economic collapse in the 1990s and the true story of a woman who is not free to disclose her sex reassignment surgery even to her husband.
There also will be a screening of short films on April 17 beginning at 5 p.m. and on April 19 at a time to be determined. Updates on the screenings can be found online.
The art exhibit will be curated by artist Dalila Mendez and Katie Poltz of the Los Angeles LGBT Center’s cultural arts department. The opening reception for the exhibit will be April 16, at 5 p.m. The exhibit will remain open until May 2. Artists featured are Manuel A. Acevedo, David John Attyah, Yukiko Avila, Daniel Barajas, Yasmine Diaz, Alex Donis, Martin Matamoros, Daniel Mendez, Byron Motley, Andrea Penagos, Luis Angel Perez and Cynthia Velasquez
Musical performances will feature DJ Joyful and Carolina Hoyos on April 16 at 8:30 p.m.; DJ Joyful, and Magaly “La Voz de Oro” on April 17 at 9:30 p.m.; Cat Mendez of ¡Aparato! and Viento Callejero on April 18 at 7:30 p.m., and Candi Sosa and Victor Cegarra on April 19 at 6 p.m. The performances produced by Cynthia Gonzalez.
Admission includes a $45 festival pass that includes admission to all films and special musical performances, $12 individual tickets for films and special musical performances and $8 individual tickets for seniors and students. Tickets can be purchased online.
