Postal Service Says It’s Working on Doheny Branch Problems

The U.S. Postal Service has acknowledged problems at its Doheny branch in West Hollywood and a spokesperson said it is working on them.

us-postal-serviceIn an email to WEHOville, Richard Maher, the spokesperson, said: “there were several major issues caused by the relocation and staffing and management changes that occurred last year, and some issues have already been resolved, such as the late opening of the retail lobby and collection mail dispatch.”

“Last week, the van that delivers Post Office Box mail was late arriving at the unit on two days. Typically PO Box mail is available for customers at 10 a.m. every day. Management has addressing the issue with the relief driver who was on duty those days.

“Some staffing changes have been made with clerks reporting earlier in the morning. There is a lead clerk who responsibility it is to ensure the office is stocked with merchandise and mailing supplies, and opens on time.

“The West Hollywood Branch no longer has a full time supervisor in the building, as the retail supervisor now manages three retail units in the area. Business cards for the retail supervisor and the customer service manager will be available for customers who wish to contact management on any service issue that cannot be resolved with one of the clerks on duty if a manager is not in the unit at the time.

“The Postal Service apologizes for the service issues some customers may have experienced in West Hollywood. Management continues to address service issues and is striving to ensure customer satisfaction.”

Maher was responding to complaints about service at the branch since it opened last summer at 458 N. Doheny Dr. south of Santa Monica. It is one of two U.S. Post Office branches in West Hollywood. The other is on Fairfax Avenue north of Santa Monica. In July of last year, the Postal Service closed the much larger branch on San Vicente Boulevard, saying it was converting it to a “delivery processing area.”

Residents have said the service area does not open on time, mail is not sorted in a timely fashion, mail sometimes takes two weeks to arrive at its local destination and there branch sometimes isn’t stocked with necessary supplies.

….don’t feel bad WeHo. Just try taking a look at the number of complaints for the main Santa Monica branch of the Post Office….the one on 7th street. Then take a look at the number of complaints with Consumer Affairs in Washington….over 5,000!!! AND complaints on the Internet go back as far as 2005…and are basically all the same type complaints that are still occurring in 2015. One would think that the Post Office is just one more incompetent governmental agency. However, its not a governmental agency any longer….only “governed”. Whatever that means. There is no parking for this location! We pay for PO Boxes and there is NO PARKING!

Plenty of people have suggested that city council work with the USPS for a new location in the Melrose Triangle Gateway. Plenty of parking and its early enough they might even manage to incorporate some drive-up mail drop-off boxes (off Melrose Ave or Almont).

Lets not forget about the dearth of parking at the Doheny site, or its poor location relative to public transit. Too bad the USPS could not have made Doheny the processing center: It would have inconvenienced a LOT fewer people. Perhaps in the future redevelopment of the MTA lot at Santa Monica and San Vicente, a future WEHO retail site can be included/moved from Doheny that would solve that problem.

It would be preferable to have one (more likely 2 because of the population and large # of office & business addresses), but it would be a nightmare to change these and far more disruptive than having 5 different ones.

I know it’s going slightly off topic & I know Council has tried working with the postal service in in the past, but wouldn’t it be great if the City of West Hollywood had one zip code dedicated to it rather than the five we now share with Los Angeles? And a West Hollywood central post office location instead of the small ones on Doheny and Fairfax, both of which are, ah, parking challenged? Or in my case, the post office for my mail, as an Eastside, is the Cherokee Station in Hollywood? I can dream…..
