Who would get John Heilman’s vote for West Hollywood City Council if John Heilman weren’t running? Apparently Larry Block.
According to several people who were there, Heilman introduced Block at his campaign fundraising event last night at Flaming Saddles bar. Heilman told those in attendance that if for some reason one of them wouldn’t vote for him in the June 2 election, he should vote for Block.
Block, the owner of The Block Party clothing store and a local activist on issues such as crosswalk safety and restoring the rainbow flag to City Hall, is one of four candidates in the special election for one Council seat. Heilman, who served 30 years on the Council until losing his race for re-election in the March 3 general election. The other candidates are Heidi Shink and Cole Ettman, each of whom has been under investigation for campaign finance irregularities. Shink’s campaign is being investigated by the West Hollywood City Prosecutor, and Ettman has had 13 lawsuits filed against his committee for a 2004 race for a state Senate seat in New York.
Ettman has won the support of a Bill Resnick, a psychiatrist who is the son of Stewart Resnick, owner of the Franklin Mint company, the Teleflora flower delivery company, Fiji water and one of the biggest producers of mandarin oranges, pistachios and pomegranates in the United States. Resnick and his wife are ranked No. 393 on Forbes magazine’s list of the world’s billionaires.
Resnick’s $40,000 contribution earlier this year to an independent expenditure committee supporting Lauren Meister was the largest single contribution ever made by an individual in a West Hollywood City Council race. Resnick is hosting an event for Ettman on Saturday at his home on Westbourne Drive.
Curiously, today’s mailer from the Heilman campaign – comparative on some issues with other candidates – mentions Shink and Ettman, but not Block. Perhaps the two have decided not to attack each other?
It’s strategy on Heilman’s part. He is splitting the vote so that he wins. He sees Larry as the least threatening, so if he can stop people from voting for Shink he can win. Shink loses if people vote for Larry and then Heilman will win. I support Larry. He’s gotten more valuable things done than just about any citizen ever, but most especially he made the yellow “slow-down” for pedestrians signs happen. They continue to delight me every time I drive on SMB. I’d like to see them all over town. Make the world slow down when they come… Read more »
Also homeowner as well, as are several of my neighbors voting for him. No question though that D’Amico and Meister’s interests demonstrably are mainly those of recent wealthy home buyers who are shocked to learn they’ve moved into a dense urban area, and are willing to do severe damage to the successful civic management led by Heilman in the name of their selfish NIMBY and anti-renter instincts.
@JJ same here!
Homeowner here for John Heilman!
John Heilman is popular to developers and the “bigger, faster, louder” crowd, but not to us homeowners. He’s obviously the smartest person ever on the Council, but his ethics, well, “bigger, faster, louder” says it. When Allegra Allison was fighting – for years – to save Laurel Place, John Heilman was on the opposite side, trying to turn Laurel Place into another developers’ garbage dump. Heilman showed no sense of love of history and aesthetics.. That says it all. Allegra won and eventually Heilman was out and should have the spirit to move on. He had his time. Not it’s… Read more »
When somebody says, if you can’t support me vote for X- that’s an endorsement – and Abbe Land repeated same at another event . Why is this any different than D’Amico supporting Shink? It’s clear that John is allowed to state his preference and comments like above are just positioning – Shink is out long ago- never had a chance.
La la la la ..John Heilman is popular!
Even for Larry, calling this an endorsement from John Heilman is something of a stretch. Anyway, “if for some reason” like hmmm; I get roofied, or a safe falls on my head or maybe temporary insanity I don’t vote for John Heilman??? Nah, I’m just gonna vote for John Heilman on June 2nd.
Heilman “supports” Block ?!?! If this were not April 1st (April Fool’s Day), I’d think that this a bogus article. Heilman’s strategy is to have anyone NOT vote for Heidi Shink. What a sad and “telling” scenario !
Block of the WIN. He is the only candidate who speaks truth and isn’t afraid to speak up and yet seems to get along with everybody. He will forge a new middle ground with Lindsey and Lauren and leave the two John’s on their idealogical head trips as fringe elements..
once again.,,, JOHN HEILMAN IS POPULAR!
la la la la la,… clearing throat (it’s early) ..drum roll.. JOHN HEILMAN IS POPULAR1
@Wehomikey. You sound bitter, but unpopular.
John Heilman, your goin’ to be popular:
I know about popular
And with an assist from me
To be who you’ll be
Instead of dreary who-you-were… or are…
There’s nothing that can stop you
From becoming populer—lar…
Sing it everyone. John Heilman is popular!
