UPDATE: The driver of a car that slammed into a Sheriff’s deputy’s vehicle on Santa Monica Boulevard near Robertson early Friday morning has been identified as Bruno Carvalho Alcantara, 26, of Los Angeles.

Deputy carThe L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, in a statement released this evening, said a deputy had stopped a vehicle on the south side of Santa Monica near P.U.M.P. lounge. “… As he stood next to the driver’s window of the detained vehicle, (the deputy) glanced over his shoulder and saw a Mercedes Benz sport utility vehicle (SUV) traveling toward him at a high rate of speed.

“Seeing that the SUV was rapidly approaching, the deputy had no other alternative but to jump out of the way to avoid getting killed. As the deputy did so, the SUV crashed into the rear of the parked patrol car. The force of the impact caused the patrol car to plow into the deputy, throwing him into the air, then onto the hood of the mangled patrol car before he came tumbling hard on the ground. “

The deputy was taken to the hospital where he was treated for his injuries and subsequently released in good condition. Alcantara and the other occupant of the SUV as well as those in the car stopped by the deputy were not injured. Alcantara apparently was texting at the time of the collision and was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Christopher – even if he has no priors, DUI + cell phone use + causing an accident + injuring a sheriff deputy (the last a minor element in the totality of the case) is certain to get more than a slap on the wrist. Almost certainly suspension of licence, heavy fine; huge insurance premiums ahead. And possible brief jail time. If priors, then a bigger sentence.

And, if things go as usual, he’ll get a slap on the wrist and be back behind the wheel in no time.

There are too many alternatives for transportation when you are drunk or high. Also, still texting while driving?…..REALLY?

There is no excuse to be driving under the influence. Take an Uber it’s less than a $10k DUI.
