Might Jim Morrison’s last WeHo home be taken down by a bulldozer?
The website Laist reports that the house at 8214 Norton Ave. near Havenhurst, where the Doors’ lead singer is said to have shared an apartment with girlfriend Pamela Courson, is on the market for $2.995 million.
The Spanish-style building has six two-bedroom apartments according to its MLS listing. The listing says plans have been filed with the city to convert the building into a bed & breakfast inn where it estimates rooms could rent for $550 a night. The list also notes the building “boasts a future development opportunity” with zoning that would allow it to be torn down and replaced by up to eight condos. The owner, Cheri Woods, is using the Ellis act to empty the building by evicting her two tenants, who rent their apartments for $3,000 each.
Woods has dubbed the building Cherie Amour and tried to promote Morrison’s connection with it to lure visitors. After several attempts, the city’s Historic Preservation Commission agreed to designate the building as historic, with opposition from commissioners Allegra Allison, Edward Levin and Gail Ostergren, who raised about Morrison’s actual connection with the building and about the importance of that in designating it as an historical or cultural resource. The proposal was sent to the West Hollywood City Council for final approval but the Council has not yet taken it up.
According to stories published in the Los Angeles Independent and the Los Angeles Times in 2005, Woods already was renting out a two-bedroom apartment in the building for short stays that she claimed had been inhabited by Morrison. In an interview with the Independent, Woods said she rented the bedroom on Airbnb for $200 a night. The building now is listed on Woods’ Cheri Woods Rentals website, where it says each of two bedrooms goes for $3,000 a month. The bedrooms, the site says, are not currently avaiable. Rentals of 29 or fewer days would be a violation of the city’s zoning ordinance.
In the interview with the Independent, Woods also contended that Morrison, who was found dead in 1971 in Paris of an apparent drug overdose, actually is still alive and is hiding with the help of the FBI.
“Jim Morrison really is alive,” Woods said. “He is living with his girlfriend in the middle of nowhere. He still smokes pot and drinks beer. The last time I talked to him, he told me he wanted to meet Billy Idol and that he liked the way Val Kilmer portrayed him in the film ‘The Doors’.”
Morrison fans seem to believe he lived there. A “Jim and Pamela” fan page on Facebook has warned that the apartment building might be demolished, pointing to a former Trulia listing that read: “If the famous building is sold to a developer, the owner plans to hold an onsite auction so Doors fans can buy original items such as ‘The Doors’ from the building before it is demolished and replaced with 8 new units at 1200 SF each (or even more if some were designated ‘affordable housing’ on the lot.”
Ben, I only met her there by the pool several days while she was visiting
Shelley! My apologies Ms. Winters!!
Shelly Winters never lived at Mediterranean Village, unfortunately. However, her boyfriend did and she practiced her swimming for that famous and heartbreaking scene in The Poseidon Adventure in our pool!
Larry, it’s not bordering on abuse of the Ellis act, it IS abuse of the Ellis Act. That property is in no way historic & the owner should NOT be given any incentives or rewards. Here’s hoping City Hall cracks down on her illegal short term rentals (as I hope they do with ALL short term rentals!) and she’s forced to offer the Ellised units back to their original tenants, at their original rents.
I hope you don’t mind, but I reblogged your article on my website Jim Morrison Project. I am in the process of a redesign, so the site is currently under construction, but I plan to launch on Jim Morrison’s birthday, Dec. 8, 2015. If there is a problem with the reprint, please let me know, and I’ll take it down immediately. Your article has been properly cited, and I have included a link to this page. Thank you for your consideration. http://www.jimmorrisonproject.com
No problem
Sitting through the application and appeal and approval to the Historic Preservation commission to have this building ‘Ellis’ed” borders abuse on the part of these landlords. New applications to the Historic Preservation Commission should include a caveat that upon approval the owner agrees to ‘not develop’ or ‘resell’ the property for a period of 5, or 10 years.
Right you are Larry. Ms. Woods seems to have had a rather creative past, perhaps even an interesting money trail augmented by cliff notes from the J. Nash playbook.
We could use fewer lookey loos and more hospitable neighborhoods that are respected as people’s homes.
fine7760 you are so right. Dozens of accomplished actors, writers, musicians, architects etc, have called West Hollywood home over the years. It is ridiculous to think that Morrison’s home is more of a historic site than those of Igor Stravinsky, Marilyn Monroe, Cary Grant and countless others. It shouldn’t be torn down mainly because it is an attractive vintage apartment house.
I met Shelly Winters a e Mederaian Village when I lived there. Is it a historic is? This is W.H., famous people lived here at one time or another.
this is what Tel Aviv ISRAEL did to keep our history and our pride.

im a little sad to here that the building may go sown, i think this can be a great little museum for Jim Morrison and the doors. i know in Israel, the will spend a little money and convert it to fun home for people to visit, this is part of WEHO.
i the same time i do know that with money you can do what ever you want in our city.
i would love to see someone invest the money and can make is investment back by having tourists from all over to visit.
What a joke. We played into her scheme of “someone famous slept here” and now she’s selling the property. This all came to a head last Sept I think. Well I for one am glad. I hope she figured out the city was cracking down on AirBNB. Sad she used the Ellis act to evict the tenants and we allowed her.
