This week and through Friday of next week, West Hollywood will join cities across the nation in lighting up red. Lights on the front of West Hollywood City Hall will glow red to encourage attention to women’s heart health during February, American Heart Month.

go red for women logoIn addition, City Hall employees on Thursday and Friday are participating in National Wear Red Day, an effort to show off a favorite red dress, shirt or tie while getting the word out about the fight against heart disease in women.

The West Hollywood Women’s Heart Health Campaign began in 2006. Only 20% of women identify heart disease as the greatest health problem facing women. However, one in three women will die of heart disease. Survivors of heart disease may also suffer disability and a significantly decreased quality of life. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease claims more women’s lives than all forms of cancer combined

The City of West Hollywood’s efforts are coordinated in support of the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women Campaign, a social initiative designed to empower women to take charge of their heart health. Throughout American Heart Month the city will distribute educational materials and promote heart health awareness for both women and men at various community events and through engagement with the local business community.
