Many in West Hollywood spent the Fourth of July at a pool party, a backyard barbeque or the beach.

But Holly Perez, the captain who took command of the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station in February, celebrated the Fourth on horseback. Perez joined Sheriff Jim McDonnell and members of the Sheriff’s Department’s Mounted Enforcement Detail for the Santa Clarita Fourth of July parade.

Perez, an avid horseback rider, didn’t ride her own horse, which she said was too old to navigate the parade. “We’ve ridden together in Rose Parade, MLK and now Newhall /Santa Clarita,” Perez said of McDonnell in a text message. “He’s becoming quite the cowboy! Not bad for a guy from Boston!!!”
