The City of West Hollywood will host tomorrow its final community meeting on the West Hollywood Park redevelopment. The meeting will take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the West Hollywood Library community meeting room, 625 N. San Vicente Blvd. south of Santa Monica.
Construction on the second phase of the park redevelopment will begin in January. This final phase includes an aquatic and recreation center, small and large dog parks, expanded green spaces, new children’s playgrounds, and an AIDS monument next to the West Hollywood Library and parking structure, which were completed in 2011 as part of the first phase.
IN LIGHT OF THE TRAGIC DEATH OF A WOMAN FALLING TO HER DEATH IN THE FIRST NEW PARKING STRUCTURE, ALL PLANS TO BUILD A SECOND TOWERING PARKING GARAGE BE PUT ON HOLD FOR A THOROUGH SAFETY REVIEW AND NEEDED ALTERATIONS TO MAKE SURE NO ONE WILL ACCIDENTALLY FALL TO THEIR DEATH … AS WE JUST TRAGICALLY SAW HAPPEN
@Randy: Instead of the city providing a place for their animals to exercise, how many dog owners actually think of taking their dogs out into the country where they both could exercise and breathe fresh air? Now that might be well appreciated by their dogs and surely more of a benefit to the owner than hours on the treadmill or spinning. “It may be that we have become so feckless as a people that we no longer care how things do work, but only what kind of quick, easy outer impression they give. If so, there is little hope for… Read more »
90069, are you serious about this? You are anti-dog ownership? What is next to be avoided? Pets provide emotional support to many, many people who live in West Hollywood (and elsewhere) who suffer from HIV, or are senior citizens. And the reality is that most gay men don’t go the way of having kids, even if “the times are changing.” A lot of gay men have them as companions. How about we all just get along and tolerate each other? Instead of saying this park is only for certain types of people? I really cannot believe some of the things… Read more »
Fascinating that Mr. Green D’Amico is supporting dog parks even though dogs are very destructive to the environment. Dog ownership is something the City should not be subsidizing as people need to consider the risks of raising animals in a very urban environment – this is not the country or suburbs, where such ownership makes more sense for several reasons. I get that many gay people of a certain age think dog ownership is a way to have “kids” but times are changing and I’m not sure if it was useful inserting these parks into the overall project was smart.… Read more »
@kab1200, who cares are people who want more than one dog park. With the number of pets in West Hollywood, one is not enough. And nothing on the west side of the city.
If Plummer Park is ever re-designed, this should be a priority there as well. Then we have one on the west side, mid-city and on the east side.
@Kab1200: WH Hart Park is under a 30 year lease from City of LA.
It is still in West Hollywood, and they have a damn dog park, which ruined the playhouse there, so who cares.https://staging.wehoville.com/2016/04/08/west-hollywood-doggedly-pursued-hart-park/
@kab1200–Wrong about what?
The minuscule dog park at Hart Park is the city’s only dog park. It is leased to West Hollywood by it’s owner the City of Los Angeles.
See kab, now you learned something.
Oh My God Jim, that park belongs to the city of West Hollywood, always has. Now you learned something.
@kab1200, yes, Hart Park is indeed a dog park. If you had watched the presentations at the City Council meetings, I think you’d see that there is a lot of demand for a dog park west of La Cienega (where there is nothing). As John D’Amico pointed out, there are more people in West Hollywood with dogs than children, and this is part of the reason this was added towards the end of the planning stage. I think it is something a lot of people want, and need. If you live in that part of West Hollywood, it would be… Read more »
Let’s plan better and maybe when we re-design Plummer Park we can have a usable, dog friendly off leash area. What about reserving some of the huge lot on Crescent Heights and Santa Monica for a dog park? Some trees and green space along Santa Monica would be nice.
There is a de facto dog park at Laurel Place which is killing the plant life and foliage with a “pee on every tree”policy.
@kab1200–There is no dog park on Kings Rd (although some people might think it’s a dog park)…..and the very small one at Hart Park is a City of Los Angeles property.
Sorry Jim, but you are wrong-http://www.weho.org/Home/Components/FacilityDirectory/FacilityDirectory/15/773
As WEHO becomes the mega concrete jungle it’s fast becoming, these parks will be the only green space left.
