The L.A. LGBT Center was vandalized this morning with anti-LGBT slurs painted across the outside of the Village at Ed Gould Plaza at 1125 N. McCadden Place east of Highland Avenue.
A story posted on the center’s Vanguard Now website said that “When employees and volunteers of the Los Angeles LGBT Center arrived for work this morning they found anti-LGBT slurs spray-painted across the entire side of one wall of a Center facility in Hollywood. The slurs painted on The Village at Ed Gould Plaza, near Santa Monica Blvd. and Highland Ave., included ‘Fuck trannies’ and ‘Fuck all yall’.”
The center’s director of facilities, Jackie DeFede, said the graffiti had been painted between 9 and 10 p.m. Thursday night while the security officer on duty was patrolling other areas of the building. DeFede said a security camera may have captured the perpetrators. She said she will be filing a police report and sharing video footage with the investigators.
According to the Vanguard post, this was not the first time the center had been vandalized. But “it is the worst case of vandalism targeting a center facility in recent history. By 11:30 a.m. center staff had painted over the slurs.”

This looks & feels like the work of a very ignorant street type person but it reminds me of the early days of APLA when I was on the telephone hotline in the little apartment building on Cole Avenue in Hollywood. Someone would leave me the key in the air conditioning unit behind the building & I would go in all alone at night & do my time on the AIDS hotline.
