Election? What election? Yes, there’s another one. It is on March 7 to fill two seats on the West Hollywood City Council. And while we won’t be choosing a president, we will be choosing two of the five people who make decisions that in one way or another can affect everything from our rent to crosswalk safety to what we’ll have to pay the next time we forget to turn the wheels of our car when parking on a hill.
But today’s most important news is: You have to register now. Voter registration for the March 7 election closes at 11:59:59 PST tonight.
If you aren’t yet registered to vote (you can check here to see if you are), the fastest way at this late date is to register online.
To register to vote in California, you must be:
— A United States citizen,
— A resident of California,
— 18 years old or older on Election Day
— Not currently imprisoned or on parole for the conviction of a felony (for more information on the rights of people who have been incarcerated, please see the Secretary of State’s Voting Rights for Californians with Criminal Convictions or Detained in Jail or Prison), and
— Not prohibited from voting by a court because of mental incompetency (for more information, please see Voting Rights: Persons Subject to Conservatorship).
To register online you will need
— Your California driver license or California identification card number,
— The last four digits of your social security number and
— Your date of birth.
If you do not have a California driver license or California identification card, you can still register to vote online by completing the online interview by 11:59:59 p.m. Pacific Time on the 15th calendar day before an election — that is today.
West Hollywood has a very low voter turnout for local elections — 20% in the 2015 City Council election — and a much higher turnout in statewide and federal elections. That’s why the city’s elections will be consolidated with the state and federal general elections in November 2020.
