Bamby Salcedo, a transgender activist, is the recipient of the second annual HerStory Award from the Hollywood National Organization of Women (NOW).
The award will be presented at an event tonight organized by NOW and West Hollywood’s Women’s Advisory Board. The event will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. at the West Hollywood Library community meeting room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Blvd., south of Santa Monica.
The event is free, although donations will be accepted. Attendees must RSVP, which can be done online.
Salcedo is president of the TransLatin@ Coalition, a national organization that focuses on addressing the issues of transgender Latin people. She currently is developing the Center for Violence Prevention & Transgender Wellness, a multipurpose, multiservice space for transgender people in Los Angeles.
Salcido has participated in several panels at the White House including in 2016 the “United State of Woman” forum, where she shared the stage with Vice President Joe Biden at the opening session and in 2015 the “Transgender Women of Color and Violence and LGBTQ People of Color Summit.” Salcido also has participated as the speaker at several conferences, including the 2015 National HIV Prevention Conference and the United States Conference on AIDS in 2009 and 2012.
Her life has been chronicled in a documentary called “TransVisible: Bamby Salcedo’s Story.”
