The weekly list of events sponsored or organized by the City of West Hollywood is longer than usual with the addition of the annual One City One Pride list. (A complete list of One City One Pride arts festival events is available at www.weho.org/pride.) The One City One Pride arts festival runs for 40 days, having started May 22 and ending on June 30, which marks the end of Pride month. Listed below are all scheduled events through June 9, including those not associated with One City One Pride, such as the Mature Drivers Improvement Course. Next Thursday we’ll update the list with events for the following week.
ONE Archives LGBTQ History Panel Displays, June 1 through 30
The city’s WeHo Arts program presents two outdoor exhibitions of LGBTQ history panels from the ONE Archives as part of its One City One Pride LGBTQ arts festival. The panels — the History of the LGBTQ Civil Rights Movement and Heroes of the LGBTQ Civil Rights Movement — will be displayed from today June 30 on the temporary construction fencing surrounding West Hollywood Park, located at 647 N. San Vicente Blvd. The ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives at the USC Libraries is the largest repository of LGBTQ materials in the world. For more information, please visit http://one.usc.edu/.
Mature Driver’s Improvement Course, June 1
The city’s Public Safety Department, in conjunction with the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station, will conduct a Mature Driver Improvement Course tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station, located at 780 N. San Vicente Blvd. Upon completion of the course, participants will be given a certificate that many automobile insurance companies will accept to reduce yearly premiums. The course is not a behind-the-wheel course, it consists of eight hours of classroom instruction, with a one-hour break.
Cost for the course is $10 per person, and RSVPs must be made in advance. Free parking is available at the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station parking lot. Classic Movie Matinee Presents Close Encounters of the Third Kind, June 1
The West Hollywood Library hosts a Classic Movie Matinee featuring Steven Spielberg’s “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the West Hollywood Library Community Meeting Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Blvd. The screening, which is sponsored by Friends of the West Hollywood Library, is free to attend and RSVPs are not required. Refreshments will be served. Lesbians to Watch Out For: ’90s L.A. Activism, Opening Reception, June 2
The city’s WeHo Arts program hosts an opening reception for “Lesbians to Watch Out For: ’90s L.A. Activism,” on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Plummer Park’s Long Hall, located at 7377 Santa Monica Blvd.
The exhibit, which is part of the One City One Pride festival, tells the stories of L.A. queer women from groups such as ACT UP LA, Queer Nation LA, Dyke March LA, the United Lesbians of African Heritage, Los Angeles Asian Pacific Islander Sisters, Lesbianas Unidas and other organizations. It is on view through June 30. The exhibit also features the “Lesbian Avengers: 25th Anniversary” traveling exhibition.
One City One Pride Day of History, June 3
The city presents its One City One Pride Day of History on Saturday at locations within the West Hollywood Library, located at 625 N. San Vicente Blvd., and at West Hollywood Park, located at 647 N. San Vicente Blvd. The Day of History events include:
— Drag Queen Storytime with children’s stories and crafts, at 11 a.m. in the West Hollywood Library Community Meeting Room;
— Stuart Timmons’ LGBTQ History Tour, a 90- to 120-minute walking and riding tour through a performance art piece with a cast of colorful characters representing different eras and historically important moments in LGBTQ history stationed along the route, with shuttles departing from the City of West Hollywood’s Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room every 15 minutes from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and
— A screening of “Reel in the Closet,” a feature-length documentary that takes a look at queer people from the past through rare home movies at 5 p.m. at the City of West Hollywood’s Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room.
“Do You: Migration of the Monarchs,” a Three-Part Conceptual Art Project, Begins June 3
“Do You: Migration of the Monarchs” is a three-part conceptual art project involving wearable art that transforms, conceptualized and performed by trans artist Yozmit, who is the first artist to receive a Trans Art grant from the City of West Hollywood through its WeHo Arts program.
The project begins with TOTEM on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in West Hollywood Park, located at 647 N. San Vicente Blvd., where Yozmit will collect prayers and stitch a ribbon or bead onto a TOTEM (wearable art costume) as a symbol of exchange. The second part, WALK, will be performed as live ambient art on June 9 from 7 to 9 p.m. along Santa Monica Boulevard.
The piece culminates with a performance in which burlesque and cabaret merge with Victorian aesthetics, Butoh, Kabuki and Pansori during the Hollywood Fringe. Intentions and prayers given in part one will be used during the performances, which will take place on June 10 at 10 p.m., June 18 at 1 p.m., and June 24 at 5:30 p.m., at Complex Theatres, Ruby Theatre, located at 6476 Santa Monica Blvd., in Los Angeles. International Children’s Day Youth Concert, June 3
The City of West Hollywood’s WeHo Arts program and the Unity in Diversity Arts Foundation present a youth concert to celebrate International Children’s Day on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Plummer Park’s Fiesta Hall, located at 7377 Santa Monica Blvd.

SASSAS soundSpark Music Series for Young Children will Feature Geneva Skeen, June 4
soundSpark is a monthly music series for young children featuring solo and duo performances by emerging artists. This month’s soundSpark performer is Geneva Skeen. The performance will take place on Saturday at noon at the West Hollywood Children’s Theater, located at 625 N. San Vicente Blvd.
soundSpark is made possible through a grant from the City of West Hollywood’s WeHo Arts program and is organized by SASSAS (The Society for the Activation of Social Space through Art and Sound). soundSpark events are free and take place on the first Saturday of each month. RSVPs are not required.
VOX Femina Presents “Woman Rising, A Taste of Season 20,” June 4
VOX Femina, with support from the City of West Hollywood through its WeHo Arts program, performs “Woman Rising, A Taste of Season 20” on Sunday from 3 to 4 p.m. at Congregation Kol Ami, located at 1200 N. La Brea Ave.
The concert, which is presented during the City’s One City One Pride festival, combines repertoire from VOX Femina’s 20th Anniversary season with a snapshot of the group’s past, present and future. Admission is free and RSVPs are not required.
The West Hollywood Women’s Book Club Discusses “The Book of Unknown Americans,” June 6
The West Hollywood Women’s Book Club is a monthly book club that meets to discuss books written by women. This month’s discussion is about “The Book of Unknown Americans” by Cristina Henriquez. Outfest West Hollywood Screening of “Pride Under Fire,” June 7
The city’s WeHo Arts program partners with Outfest to present a screening of “Pride Under Fire” on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the City Council Chambers, located at 625 N. San Vicente Blvd. The documentary examines Louisville, Ky, as an example of a nation divided in the aftermath of the Pulse Night Club shooting, with Pride celebrants reclaiming their parade while others remain deeply embedded in gun culture and exclusion. After the screening, there will be a discussion about where we are as a community one year after the Pulse shooting.

Hollywood Fringe/One City One Pride, June 8 through June 25
Through a special collaboration with the city’s WeHo Arts, the Hollywood Fringe Festival extends its western border into West Hollywood with LGBTQ shows as part of the One City One Pride festival. The Hollywood Fringe festival takes place from Thursday through June 25 at various locations in and around West Hollywood and Hollywood.
The Hollywood Fringe Festival is an open and uncensored community-derived theatre event. This special collaboration provides LGBTQ shows as part of the One City One Pride festival with a small scholarship that offsets the cost of registration with The Hollywood Fringe. “Pride Ride” Special Shuttle Service Provided by The PickUp and CityLineX, June 9, 10 and 11
West Hollywood’s free shuttle to Hollywood and Highland, CityLineX, and West Hollywood’s free weekend ride along Santa Monica Boulevard, The PickUp, will get together and become “Pride Ride.” Pride Ride will operate on June 9 from 1 p.m. to 3 a.m. (with service to and from Hollywood and Highland ending at approximately 9 p.m.) and on June 10 from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. (with service to and from Hollywood and Highland ending at approximately 1 a.m.).
On June 11, beginning at 7 a.m., CityLineX vehicles will depart from West Hollywood at 15-minute intervals to transport residents to Hollywood and Highland for the Resist March. Following the march, Pride Ride will provide eastbound service from the Pacific Design Center, continuing until approximately 5:30 p.m. — route details and specifics will be available online prior to #ResistMarch.
West Hollywood Dyke March and Rally, June 9
The city and its Lesbian and Gay Advisory Board present the annual Dyke March on June 9 with programming beginning at 6 p.m., at the Sal Guarriello Veterans’ Memorial, located at 8447 Santa Monica Blvd. at Holloway.
The evening kicks off at 6 p.m. with a live DJ set with Claudette Sexy DJ and a protest sign and pin making workshop led by artist Julianna Parr, with all materials provided. The rally will begin at 7 p.m. with guest speakers that include members of the West Hollywood City Council and L.A. County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, as well are representatives from SEIU, Black Lives Matter, Planned Parenthood, and the “Lesbians to Watch Out For: ’90s L.A. Activism” exhibit.
The march down Santa Monica Boulevard to San Vicente Boulevard and back begins at 8 p.m., led by the Nasty Women’s Drum Circle of Long Beach, who will continue to perform when the march returns to the park, and will be followed by another live DJ set by Claudette Sexy DJ.
Out There Exhibit Opening Reception, June 9
The Los Angeles Art Association hosts the opening reception for “Out There,” an all-media exhibition, on June 9 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Gallery 825, located at 825 N. La Cienega Blvd. The exhibit, which is part of the city’s One City One Pride festival, runs through June 16. Admission is free. L.A. Pride Trans Party and #SIZZLE, June 9
The L.A. Pride Festival hosts a trans party on June 9 from 7 to 11 p.m. in the festival grounds, located in West Hollywood Park at 647 N.
