The Los Angeles LGBT Center will host a discussion on Tuesday about the ongoing struggle for equality and freedom since the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando — the deadliest incident against LGBT people in U.S. history — and how progressive people can work together to build a more just and compassionate world.
“One year ago, the world watched in horror as an outrageous act of terror was committed against the LGBT community,” the Center said in an announcement of the event. “Since then, less conspicuous but equally chilling attacks on vulnerable communities continue unabated: A quiet war against LGBT people, communities of color, women, immigrants, Muslims, and the poor—just to name a few—has been waged since the November U.S. presidential election.”
“The continued assault on the rights, freedoms, and safety of marginalized communities requires that we call our leaders to account and progressive people to action,” said Alan Acosta, the L.A. LGBT Center’s director of strategic initiatives. “We hope that this conversation can lead to a deeper understanding of the issues at stake and help develop powerful and creative responses to policies that stigmatize and victimize millions of our friends, neighbors, and family members.”
The forum is part of the Center’s Big Queer Convo series. It will include Shedrick Davis, Western regional director for Lambda Legal; Nikki Levy, an activist, actor and host of the “Don’t Tell My Mother” show; Mariana Marroquin, anti-violence project manager at the Center, and Apolonio Morales, political director of theCoalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles. Alan Acosta will moderate the forum.
The forum will be followed by a reception with refreshments at The Village courtyard. It will take place at the Center’s Renberg Theatre at The Village at Ed Gould Plaza, 1125 N. McCadden Place in Los Angeles.
