Maria Shriver will receive the “Individual Award” during West Hollywood’s 19th annual Disability Service Awards event on Wednesday.
Shriver is one of four recipients of the disability service awards, which recognize individuals, businesses and nonprofit organizations for work with people living with disabilities including accessibility issues, attention to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements, or advocacy.
Other award recipients are MV Transportation – Business Award; Gold Pictures – Media Award, and Braille Institute – Nonprofit Award.
Shriver is the founder of the Women’s Alzheimer’s Network. MV Transportation is known for providing transportation services to people with disabilities. Gold Pictures’ Jenni Gold is known for “CinemAbility,” her documentary about Hollywood’s history of portraying the disabled on screen. The Braille Institute is an organization whose mission is to eliminate barriers to life caused by blindness and severe sight loss.
The theme of the Disability Service Award event is “healthcare,” and the evening will include presentations about legislative and advocacy efforts to improve healthcare access. Presenters will include Elan Shultz, senior health deputy, Office of Supervisor Sheila Kuehl; Aaron Fox, director of government relations, Los Angeles LGBT Center, and Hillary Selvin, executive director, National Council of Jewish Women Los Angeles.
The awards ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. at the West Hollywood City Council Chambers, 625 N. San Vicente Blvd. A reception will take place prior to the meeting, beginning at 5 p.m. Admission is free; RSVPs are not required. Validated parking will be available in the adjacent five-story structure, accessible from North San Vicente Boulevard.
West Hollywood’s Disabilities Advisory Board was created in 1995 and is comprised of nine members. The Disabilities Advisory Board addresses issues affecting people with disabilities, including ADA compliance, transportation, housing, access to city government and services for people with disabilities, and makes recommendations to the West Hollywood City Council relative to the adoption of programs, policies, or ordinances of benefit to the constituency.

I’m a former member and chair of the disability advisory board and although I admire Maria Shriver for her work she already has national attention. Isn’t our West Hollywood Awards about locals doing good things for locals. People who go unrecognized? Maria Shriver has national notoriety, but the head of Being Alive or APLA, or those who do work that go unrecognized should be how this board makes a difference.
