The West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station has a new captain.
Lt. Edward Ramirez has been named to the position. Now Capt. Ramirez, he succeeds Sergio Aloma, who headed the station for about 20 months before he was promoted in January to the rank of commander and charged with overseeing the Sheriff’s Department’s Custody Division in downtown Los Angeles.
Ramirez has been with the station for a number of years and under Aloma has effectively served as a liaison with the community, attending Public Safety Commission meetings and other community events where law enforcement-related issues were discussed. In his new role as captain he replaces Lt. William Moulder, who was the temporary captain while a permanent successor to Aloma was being chosen.
Typically the Sheriff’s Department presents three candidates for review by West Hollywood City Manager Paul Arevalo, who then passes along a recommendation to the Sheriff, who makes the final decision. That can take months, as it did when Aloma was finally chosen in March 2017 to replace then-Capt. Holly Perez, who was promoted to a commander position after 12 months at the West Hollywood Station.
As a so-called “contract city,” West Hollywood contracts with the Sheriff’s Department for public safety services, spending more than $20 million a year. The quick promotion and transfer of Perez and now of Aloma has prompted West Hollywood City Council members to ask that the Sheriff’s Department keep the local captain in place for a longer period of time.
The Sheriff’s Department has not yet formally announce Ramirez’s appointment. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
Not to take away from his predecessors…but this is WONDERFUL news! Ed Ramirez is a GREAT choice; and knows how to work with people. I hope LASD allows us to keep him here for a long time to come.
Congratulations, Captain!
Congratulations Captain Ramirez!!! May your Departmental & Community vision be living, thriving & legendary. And may this start immediately, fueled by your wisdom & the core of your being.
