“A Tough Act to Follow” is a revealing film with stories from actors and comedians about the challenges of being black or gay or a woman in Hollywood comedy clubs. This documentary features Sampson McCormick (Viceland: “That B*&#! Better Be Funny”), Adele Givens (“Queens of Comedy,” “Def Comedy Jam”), Darryl Stephens (“Noah’s Arc,” “Boy Culture”), Karen Williams (Logo: “I Need A Snack”), Luenell (“Borat,” “Comic View”) and Karen Ripley & Sinbad (“A Different World”). Co-produced by Emmy Award-winning director Todd Clark, the film focuses primarily on Sampson and his life as a gay black man in an industry where just being black makes it hard to be successful. I love how this documentary points out some key issues with Hollywood entertainment businesses and their attitude toward the LGBT community. It is an amazing story and reminds us that no matter how far we think the world has come we still have a lot of work to do to achieve equality for woman, people of color and the LGBT communities.
