UPDATE: The watch commander for the West Hollywood Sheriff’s station said the man standing on top of the billboard on Santa Monica Boulevard at Palm was taken down and has been transported to the hospital. No other information is available at the moment.

Nearly two dozen Sheriff’s deputies and L.A. County firefighters are clustered beneath the  billboard on Santa Monica Boulevard at Palm this evening in an effort to talk down a man standing on top of the billboard.

The officers have raised a large crane up to the billboard and placed an air trap under it and begun an effort to talk him into coming down.

The photos posted here were taken by Larry Block, who is on the scene. Currently the man, who is African-American and shirtless, is telling the firefighters to back off.

We’ll update this story as it develops.

So many tax dollars and services are being used for mentally disturbed people who have bi-polar schizophrenia or are on drugs and having episodes of hallucinations paranoia or becoming or continuing to be menaces to society—all races that are more than just homeless, but mentally unstable and violent! The city of West Hollywood is having to use thousands of dollars in monetary resources and more city funds are being used for these people over residents who need services and assistance programs and funds are being taken away to address this crisis that is only getting worse! The same thing happened in Palm Springs a few months ago. Some guy ended up on a roof of a hardware store one morning and had to be removed from there. The guy was probably on a bender from a party and couldn’t find his way home. They had to close Sunny Dunes Road because of all the commotion. Drug use is just rampant and is everywhere, not just in little old West Hollywood.

This seems an appropriate billboard welcome mat complete with a live nut case that reflects what West Hollywood yearns to attract.

The County Fire and Rescue and Sheriff department should be reimbursed by the billboard owner for the cost of getting him down. They are negligent by allowing the ability of someone to climb up there. The person might also have a claim against the billboard owner for endangering his life. No matter if he was on drugs, mentality ill or whatever. It is the responsibility of the owner of the billboard to ensure that no one came get up there. A good Lawyer could present a strong case against the billboard owner.

And this would be the reason some people hate lawyers!

Why is this the first thing that comes to your mind?

Doing business in and partying in West Hollywood absolves no one of responsibility…….or theoretically it should not. Not an advocate for the lawyers you mention but ultimately the city and residents will be saddled with the cost of the emergency personnel because the nut case is irresponsible.
