The local buzz about the Supremes (the judges, not Diana Ross, et al) has quieted with word this morning that the highest court in the land won’t decide before Friday, at the earliest, whether to take up a challenge to the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which bars federal recognition of same-sex marriages, or California’s Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriages here. Supporters of same-sex marriage have anticipated several times now that the court would announce whether it was going to consider one or both challenges. A scheduled press conference by West Hollywood City Council members attracted only John Duran. (Maybe they could save City Hall staff some time if they’d all just issue statements now saying how they’d feel about a court decision to take up the matter, or not. We’re guessing we wouldn’t be surprised).
