Graffiti on Two West Hollywood Businesses Stirs Fears of Anti-Semitism

A surge in violence against Jews that has occurred across the country – including nine attacks last week in New York City alone and vandalism of a synagogue in Beverly Hills – has raised fears that anti-Semitism is on the rise in the United States.

Those fears could be bolstered by two recent acts of vandalism in West Hollywood city’s Boystown nightlife district.  On Sunday, The Bayou WeHo, a popular New Orleans-themed restaurant and bar, opened to find graffiti on its door that read “Hitler was RIGHT” and included a five-point star that may have been intended to represent the six-point Star of David. This morning, Jim Hieronymus, an employee of the Block Party store on Santa Monica Boulevard, opened the store to find two somewhat similar five-point stars scrawled on its window.  The vandal also painted the letters GD and LK on the window.

Video obtained from Micky’s, the gay nightclub adjacent to the Block Party, shows a young Caucasian man carrying a backpack and a plastic bag walking west on the sidewalk. He is filmed stopping in front of the Block Party and appears to be painting on its window.

In December, Nessah Synagogue in Beverly Hills was vandalized. A Caucasian man was caught on camera entering the synagogue, one of the most prominent Persian synagogues in the United States. Later, an employee entered and discovered Torahs thrown across the floor along with yarmulkas and prayer shawls.  Police arrested Anton Nathaniel Redding, 24, of Millersville, Penn. Haaretz, the Israeli newspaper, has reported that three Jewish schools in Los Angeles were tagged with anti-Semitic graffiti days later. The schools were Westwood Charter School, the Bel Air campus of American Jewish University and Milken Community High School on Mulholland Drive.

Rabbi Denise Eger of West Hollywood’s Congregation Kol Ami said the graffiti was disturbing.  Rabbi Egger said the formation of the Jewish Community Security Initiative as evidence of the community’s concerns.  The CSI was launched in 2012 by the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles. Its web page says it was “created to serve as a single point of contact for critical incident coordination, information and intelligence sharing, safety and security training and resources for all of Jewish Los Angeles.”

Lt. Bill Moulder of the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station also said those acts of vandalism in West Hollywood were worrisome in light of the increase in attacks against Jews across the country.  Moulder said the station would be investigating the incidents.

Moulder said that vandalism is a crime, and if the graffiti is interpreted to be anti-Semitic, it would be seen as a hate crime.  He urged residents to alert the Sheriff’s Station any time they seem similar scurrilous graffiti.  That can be reported by dialing 911 or calling the West Hollywood Station directly at (310) 855-8850.

I agee, graffiti needs to be addressed as soon as it is discovered. In addition to using the City of WeHo’s app to report graffiti found in West Hollywood, I’d encourage people to also use the City of LA’s “MyLA 311” app to immediately report any graffiti discovered just outside our borders in the City of LA. Like most other criminals, vandals have little regard for city boundaries and we should be vigilant about reporting any graffiti we find so that it doesn’t continue.

Happy New Year everyone!

The chatter over the origin of the graffiti obscures the fact that this kind of
civic insult is a symptom of the (national culture) current rupture in any sort of
reasonable discourse about our many differences. What does it matter if
Larry Block is or is not a Jew? The impact of the graffiti is universally disturbing.

I must come back and address I wrote above. It REALLY DOES MATTER that Larry Block is Jewish because what I am witnessing in our unique country, from top to bottom is exactly what preceded the horrors of the NAZI regime. Citizens are divided by the authoritarian nationalism of Mr. Trump and his party and his associates. “Don’t let it happen here!” “Never again!” It is the duty of those who remember to alert the current generation to the signs of imminent danger.

Are you guys really trying to downplay this as “not being antisemitic”?! Yes, Larry Block is Jewish.

Just fyi, a five pointed star in a circle is the official symbol of the Wicca religion. When the star is pointing up, it indicates divine energy coming from above.

There is also the same five pointed star in a circle pointing down that is often misused as a symbol of the devil, is actually in Wiccan/pagan circles a symbol of energy coming from below, from the Earth and Nature, herself.

GD with a 6-point star is also a very large and prominent gang’s tag (Gangster Disciples). LK with a 5 point star often stands for Latino Kings who are affiliated with the People nation. The 5 point star is the sign of the People nation, as seen on tags of Vice Lords. Chicago gangs with limited presence on the West Coast. Perhaps the work of a teenager with a fascination with gang symbology?

We shall see about that, Chas. So far, every antisemitic attack in 2019 has been Black, Muslim, or both.

Very Racist Islamophobic misinformation you are putting out there! In 2019 the vast majority of violent antisemitic hate crimes were committed by white supremacists. In Toledo, Ohio, December 2018: ONLY ONE Islamist extremist Daniel Joseph (an American born white male) was arrested by the FBI after he unwittingly worked with an undercover agent to PLAN an attack on a synagogue. Even the ADL (Anti-Defamation League) data shows that, the majority of antisemitic hate crimes are committed by white nationalists/supremacists with an even deeper hatred for Muslims and a history of hate crimes against them!

Yes, these are gangs with low level presence on the West Coast in general and lower still in L.A. Sometimes young people become fascinated with the symbolism after they find out about these things on line. Perhaps they listen to music by artists with affiliations with one of these groups. Whatever it is, it’s probably someone who has a lot of growing up to do.

Hello, I have a question. Is Larry Block Jewish and is the owner of the Bayou Jewish ? Are they being singled out or are there other Jewish business owners.
