COVID-19: WeHo Infections Up Slightly, and County Reports No Increase in Testing

The Los Angeles County Public Health Department today reported no new confirmed COVID-19 infections among West Hollywood residents, which may be a sign that the virus infections are plateauing in West Hollywood.

Today’s count of 141 is the same as that on Tuesday.  The number of  confirmed infections on Saturday and Sunday was flat at 139, and the count was flat at 137 on both Thursday and Friday last week. However, the Health Department’s online database has reported for several weeks that only 704 West Hollywood residents have been tested, so it is unclear whether the increases in infections are a result of delayed results from those tests or if the Health Department simply isn’t updating the database. WEHOville has reached out to the Health Department with several questions only to get delayed or no responses.

The Health Department opened a mobile testing center at Alden Drive on the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center campus and has invited residents to go online to make an appointment for a test.  Currently, however, it isn’t possible to find the Cedars-Sinai site on the testing registration page.  A Cedars-Sinai employee has explained that that is because appointment slots are booked out in full for five days, a result of the Health Department’s decision to let asymptomatic folks sign up for testing. Previously testing only was available to those with symptoms of an infection.

In today’s report, the Health Department said there have been 851 new confirmed COVID-19 infections countywide, bringing the total to 28,644. There have been 55 new deaths, bringing that total to 1,367. Three West Hollywood residents have died thus far.

Forty-one people who died were over the age of 65 and 12 were between the ages of 41. The Health Department did not report the ages of the other two people who have died.

Two new infections were reported in Beverly Hills, bringing its total to 116. The number of infections in Culver City grew by three to 88. The Hollywood neighborhood had one new confirmed infection, bringing its total to 202. The number of confirmed infections in the Melrose neighborhood increased by four to a total of 394.

Roadmap to Recovery

The Health Department has issued a five-stage “roadmap to recovery” that describes a phased approach to relaxing the state Safer at Home Order and allowing certain businesses to reopen.  L.A. County is currently in Stage One of the Safer at Home recovery process, the Health Department reported today. That stage requires the closure of all but “essential” businesses, which include grocery stores and pharmacies, restaurants offering takeout and pickup services, cannabis retailers, hardware stores, bike repair shops, and service stations.

The county anticipates beginning Stage Two as soon as Friday, which will allow florists and some retailers (book stores, clothing stores, sporting good stores, toy stores) to offer curbside pickup. Car dealerships, golf courses and trails can also open with appropriate safeguards in place. Physical distancing and infection control protocols must be adhered to and cloth facing coverings must be worn.  The Health Department’s roadmap’s Stage Two also includes libraries, parks, museums and art galleries along with offices and retailers deemed to have a low risk of infection, all of which it says will be opening “soon” without specifying an actual date.

Stage Three, for which a date hasn’t yet been set, includes the opening of higher risk businesses such as massage parlors, bars and nightclubs along with movie theatres, bowling alleys and schools and colleges.

The county Health Department’s Stage Four would allow the opening of large convention areas, sporting and spectator events and entertainment venues.  However, Gov. Gavin Newsom has said that Stage Four won’t happen until treatments for the coronavirus have been developed. Newsom has not made clear whether he is referring to vaccines to prevent the virus or more effective treatments for those who are infected by it, many of whom have been undergoing treatment in hospitals already.

Threat to the Troubadour

That uncertainty has led to the Christine Karayan, manager of the Troubadour, questioning whether that iconic venue on Santa Monica Boulevard ever will reopen.  In an interview with the L.A. Times, Karayan said that if the opening of the club is delayed until the middle of next year, and then must limit the number of people admitted, it likely won’t survive.  The Troubadour opened in the late 1960s and has been home to performers such as Elton John, Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, and the Eagles. It has launched a GoFundMe campaign https://www.gofundme.com/f/troubadour-relief-fund to help pay its staff of more than 20 people.

“Until final Stage Five is reached, health officer orders and directives will still continue to ensure that we slow the spread of COVID-19 to prevent an overwhelming surge of COVID-19 cases at healthcare facilities,” the Health Department has said. “Physical distancing, wearing cloth face coverings, frequent hand washing, self-isolation and self-quarantine will continue to be very important throughout the foreseeable future. People who have underlying health conditions will still be at much greater risk for serious illness from COVID-19, so it will continue to be very important for the County’s vulnerable residents to stay at home as much as possible, to have groceries and medicine delivered, and to know to call their providers immediately if they have even mild symptoms.”

The best protection against COVID-19 is to wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands, self-isolate if you are sick, practice physical distancing (especially by staying at home) and wear a clean face covering when in contact with others from outside your household.

Essential businesses must provide a cloth face covering for all employees to wear while performing duties that involve contact with other employees and or the public and to post physical distancing plans. The public is required to wear a face covering to enter essential businesses as well. Beaches, trails and trailheads and non-essential businesses remain closed, and all public and private gatherings of any number of people occurring outside a single household or living unit remain prohibited.

Residents with questions about the COVID-19 pandemic and who are looking for resources to deal with it can find answers on the City of West Hollywood’s  website.  Here is a list of links to sections about particular issues:

When the Cedars site didn’t show up as an option, I scheduled a test at the mobile testing center near Wilshire & the 405. It took about 45 minutes. It was well organized and you swab yourself inside your vehicle. They claim your sample with a “grabber.” They hold up signs to communicate and there’s even a Youtube instructional video you can watch by scanning a QR code with your phone.
