Los Angeles County continues shattering COVID-19 records on a daily basis this week as the county reported record high numbers of new cases and of people hospitalized on Thursday.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported 7,854 new cases of coronavirus Thursday, surpassing the previous record of 7,593 set on Tuesday.
There are 2,572 people with COVID-19 currently hospitalized and 23% of these people are in the ICU. This number surpassed all-time high of 2,439 people hospitalized which the county set on Wednesday.
County health officials say this continued surge in new cases and hospitalizations is not sustainable because as hospitalizations increase sharply, the healthcare system can become overwhelmed.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom has announced that whenever a region’s number of available ICU beds falls below 15%, it will trigger a new stay-at-home lockdown order for that region. The lockdown will go into effect 24 hours after it is announced and last for three weeks, but could be extended if needed.
Southern California is so close to hitting that 15% mark of available ICU beds, the region could go on lockdown within the next few days.
“The bottom line is, if we don’t act now, our hospital system will be overwhelmed,” Newsom said. “If we don’t act now, we’ll continue to see the death rate climb, more lives lost.”
Los Angeles County reported another 44 deaths on Thursday, for a cumulative total of 7,782 deaths from COVID-19 since the pandemic began. Some 93% of all people who died from COVID-19 had underlying conditions.
The county now has a cumulative total off 421,881 confirmed cases since the pandemic began.
West Hollywood reported 15 new cases on Thursday, for a cumulative total of 970 cases. The number of deaths in the city remains unchanged at nine.

- Beverly Hills – 16 new cases for a total of 1,035 cases.
- Culver City – 16 new cases for a total of 674 cases.
- Hollywood – 44 new cases for a total of 2,016 cases.
- Melrose neighborhood – 46 new cases for a total of 2,982 cases.
- Miracle Mile – 5 new cases for a total of 319 cases.
- Park La Brea – 5 new cases for a total of 201 cases.
- Santa Monica – 36 new cases for a total of 1,573 cases.
