Although distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine in Los Angeles County has been slow, the latest surge has clearly peaked as evidenced by the numbers for Friday.
New cases and hospitalizations continue on a downward trend, although deaths remain high. Deaths are always to last thing to decline in these situations.
Approximately 790,000 doses of the vaccine have been administered so far, according to LA County health officials. However, they did not break that number down into how many people have received a first dose and how many have received both doses. The county is receiving an average of 150,000 vaccine doses each week.
County health officials announced 228 more COVID-related deaths on Friday. The county’s cumulative death toll is now 16,332 people.
The highest number of COVID deaths in a single day was 318 deaths, recorded on Jan. 8. The second highest was 307 deaths, recorded on Wednesday.
There are 5,855 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Los Angeles County on Friday. That’s 171 fewer people than were hospitalized on Thursday when there were 6,026 people hospitalized.
The county’s all-time high for COVID hospitalizations occurred on Jan. 7, when there were 8,098 people hospitalized.
The state reported there are 1,498 people in the ICU.
LA County reported 7,112 new COVID-19 cases on Friday. The county now has a cumulative total of 1,104,393 cases since the pandemic began in March.
To date, more than 5.46 million people have been tested for the coronavirus since the pandemic began. Of those tested, an overall average of 19% are testing positive.
West Hollywood recorded 7 new cases for a cumulative total of 1,910 cases since the pandemic began. The city had no new deaths; the cumulative death total is 24 deaths.

- Beverly Hills – 18 new cases for a total of 2,218 cases and no new deaths for a total of 22 deaths.
- Carthay neighborhood – no new cases for a total of 815 cases and no new deaths for a total of 44 deaths.
- Century City – 3 new case for a total of 529 cases and no new deaths for a total of 9 deaths.
- Culver City – 12 new cases for a total of 1,888 cases and 1 new death for a total of 68 deaths.
- Hollywood – 33 new cases for a total of 4,740 cases and no new deaths for a total of 49 deaths.
- Melrose neighborhood – 60 new cases total of 7,153 cases and 1 new death for a total of 162 deaths.
- Miracle Mile – 7 new cases for a total of 799 cases and 1 new death for a total of 13 deaths.
- Park La Brea – 3 new case for a total of 505 cases and no new deaths for a total of 1 death.
- Santa Monica – 25 new cases for a total of 3,886 cases and no new deaths for a total of 114 deaths.
The Carthay neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles between the Beverly Hills city limits and Fairfax Avenue, with Beverly Boulevard as the northern border and Wilshire Boulevard as the southern border.
The Melrose neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles east of La Cienega and west of Vermont Avenue, between Santa Monica Boulevard on the north and Beverly Boulevard on the south.
