COVID numbers in Los Angeles County continue trending downward on Sunday, but officials worry there may be another surge as the UK variant of the coronavirus spreads.
On Saturday, county health officials reported that two additional cases of the COVID-19 variant B.1.1.7 first discovered in the UK have also been detected here, bringing the total to 14 so far in Los Angeles County.
The UK variant is known to spread more easily and quickly than other variants. In January 2021, British scientists reported evidence that suggests it might be associated with an increased risk of death compared with other variants, but said more studies were needed to confirm this finding.
“With the UK variant circulating in the county, we will likely see more variant cases identified in the county,” Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said. “We must remain diligent with our safety measures even though we see overall decreases in cases, hospitalizations and deaths. Let’s keep our guard up because we know letting our guard down will lead to more cases and, tragically, more deaths again.”
There are 2,369 people currently in the hospital in Los Angeles County according to county health officials. That’s 129 fewer people in the hospital than on Saturday when there were 2,498 people hospitalized.
The county’s all-time high for COVID hospitalizations occurred on Jan. 7, when there were 8,098 people hospitalized.
There are approximately 724 people currently in the ICU.
County health officials announced 93 more COVID-related deaths on Sunday. The county’s cumulative death toll is now 19,885 people.
The highest number of COVID deaths in a single day in the county is 318 deaths, recorded on Jan. 8, while the second highest is 316 deaths, which occurred on Jan. 30.
LA County reported 1,465 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday. The county now has a cumulative total of 1,180,485 cases since the pandemic began in March.
To date, almost 5.76 million people have been tested for the coronavirus since the pandemic began.
West Hollywood recorded 10 new cases for a cumulative total of 2,093 cases since the pandemic began. The city had no new deaths; the cumulative death total is 28 deaths.

- Beverly Hills – 6 new cases for a total of 2,417 cases and 28 deaths.
- Carthay neighborhood – 1 new case for a total of 870 cases and 52 deaths.
- Century City – 3 new cases for a total of 563 cases and 12 deaths.
- Culver City – 3 new cases for a total of 2,059 cases and 79 deaths.
- Hollywood – 6 new cases for a total of 5,111 cases and 56 deaths.
- Melrose neighborhood – 14 new cases total of 7,683 cases and 185 deaths.
- Miracle Mile – 2 new cases for a total of 883 cases and 14 deaths.
- Park La Brea – no new cases for a total of 544 cases and 1 death.
- Santa Monica – 7 new cases for a total of 4,238 cases and 133 deaths.
The Carthay neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles between the Beverly Hills city limits and Fairfax Avenue, with Beverly Boulevard as the northern border and Wilshire Boulevard as the southern border.
The Melrose neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles east of La Cienega and west of Vermont Avenue, between Santa Monica Boulevard on the north and Beverly Boulevard on the south.
