COVID numbers in Los Angeles County continue to go down on Sunday, but officials worry about another surge if people get lax about wearing masks and social distancing.
“We have been in this position before, on the downside of a surge in cases.” County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said Saturday. “We must not have a false confidence and must stay committed to the very safety measures that are helping to decrease our cases, hospitalizations and deaths.”
A total of 18 cases of a coronavirus variant first detected in the United Kingdom have been found in Los Angeles County. That UK variant is said to be more contagious, but not more deadly. So far, there haven’t been any cases of a variant found in South Africa detected in LA County.
A variant that emerged in California last summer appears to have become dominant in much of the state. That California variant is believed to be the one that caused the most recent surge that began in November.
There are 1,661 people currently in the hospital in Los Angeles County according to county health officials. That’s 72 fewer people in the hospital than on Saturday when there were 1,733 people hospitalized.
The county’s all-time high for COVID hospitalizations occurred on Jan. 7, when there were 8,098 people hospitalized.
There are approximately 550 people currently in the ICU. The county’s total ICU capacity is about 2,500 beds.
County health officials announced 107 more COVID-related deaths on Sunday. The overall death toll in LA County is 21,435 people.
The highest number of COVID deaths in a single day occurred on Jan. 8 with 318 deaths. The second highest occurred on Jan. 30 with 316 deaths.
LA County reported 1,064 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday. The county now has a cumulative total of 1,191,923 cases since the pandemic began in March.
To date, almost 5.83 million people have been tested for the coronavirus since the pandemic began.
West Hollywood recorded 2 new cases; the cumulative total is 2,117 cases since the pandemic began. The city had no new deaths; the cumulative death total is 31 deaths.

- Beverly Hills – 1 new case for a total of 2,462 cases and 32 deaths.
- Carthay neighborhood – 2 new cases for a total of 854 cases and 58 deaths.
- Century City – 1 new case for a total of 567 cases and 11 deaths.
- Culver City – 2 new cases for a total of 2,083 cases and 89 deaths.
- Hollywood – 5 new cases for a total of 5,170 cases and 63 deaths.
- Melrose neighborhood – 12 new cases total of 7,799 cases and 193 deaths.
- Miracle Mile – no new cases for a total of 896 cases and 15 deaths.
- Park La Brea – no new cases for a total of 559 cases and 1 death.
- Santa Monica – 6 new cases for a total of 4,329 cases and 148 deaths.
The Carthay neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles between the Beverly Hills city limits and Fairfax Avenue, with Beverly Boulevard as the northern border and Wilshire Boulevard as the southern border.
The Melrose neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles east of La Cienega and west of Vermont Avenue, between Santa Monica Boulevard on the north and Beverly Boulevard on the south.
