Thursday COVID Numbers: Hospitalizations, ICU Admissions Rise for Second Straight Day

COVID hospitalizations and ICU admissions in Los Angeles County on Thursday continue on a slight upward rise that began on Wednesday. The rise is minor at this point, but two straight days of rising numbers is concerning. If hospitalizations continue rising, it could be the start of another surge.

There are 729 people currently in the hospital in Los Angeles County according to county health officials. That’s 10 more than on Wednesday when there were 719 people hospitalized.    

The county’s all-time high for COVID hospitalizations occurred on Jan. 7, when there were 8,098 people hospitalized.

There are currently 183 people in the ICU, according to the state, up from 169 on Wednesday. The county’s total ICU capacity is about 2,500 beds.

County health officials announced 66 more COVID-related deaths on Thursday. The cumulative death toll in LA County is 23,020 people.

The highest number of COVID deaths in a single day occurred on Jan. 8 with 318 deaths. The second highest occurred on Jan. 30 with 316 deaths.

LA County reported 608 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday. The county now has a cumulative total of  1,216,250 cases since the pandemic began in March.

To date, almost 6.04 million people in the county have been tested for the coronavirus since the pandemic began. Thursday’s daily positivity rate was 1.6%.

West Hollywood recorded 4 new cases; the cumulative total is 2,214 cases since the pandemic began. The city had 3 new deaths; the cumulative death total is 38 deaths.

Below are the numbers for areas near West Hollywood:

  • Beverly Hills – 2 new cases for a total of 2,576 cases and 35 deaths.
  • Carthay neighborhood – 2 new cases for a total of 899 cases and 64 deaths.
  • Century City – 1 new case for a total of 587 cases and 12 deaths.
  • Culver City – no new cases for a total of 2,132 cases and 95 deaths.
  • Hollywood – 1 new cases for a total of 5,359 cases and 67 deaths.
  • Melrose neighborhood – 4 new case total of 8,001 cases and 200 deaths.
  • Miracle Mile – no new case for a total of  947 cases and 15 deaths.
  • Park La Brea – 1 new case for a total of 592 cases and 1 death.
  • Santa Monica – 10 new cases for a total of 4,549 cases and 160 deaths.

The Carthay neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles between the Beverly Hills city limits and Fairfax Avenue, with Beverly Boulevard as the northern border and Wilshire Boulevard as the southern border. 

The Melrose neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles east of La Cienega and west of Vermont Avenue, between Santa Monica Boulevard on the north and Beverly Boulevard on the south.
