COVID hospitalizations in Los Angeles County fell below 700 people for the first time in almost six months on Friday. That’s doubly good news because not only is it a major milestone for the end of this most recent surge, it is also an indication the slight surge in the past two days – Wednesday and Thursday – was a blip.
There are 692 people currently in the hospital in Los Angeles County according to county health officials. That’s 37 fewer than on Thursday when there were 729 people hospitalized.
The last time there were fewer than 700 people in the hospital with COVID was Oct. 7 when there were 696 people hospitalized. The next day, Oct. 8, the number jumped to 709 people.
The county’s all-time high for COVID hospitalizations occurred on Jan. 7, when there were 8,098 people hospitalized.
There are currently 170 people in the ICU, according to the state, down from 183 on Thursday. The county’s total ICU capacity is about 2,500 beds.
County health officials announced 39 more COVID-related deaths on Friday. The cumulative death toll in LA County is 23,055 people.
The highest number of COVID deaths in a single day occurred on Jan. 8 with 318 deaths. The second highest occurred on Jan. 30 with 316 deaths.
LA County reported 859 new COVID-19 cases on Friday. The county now has a cumulative total of 1,217,034 cases since the pandemic began in March.
To date, almost 6.05 million people in the county have been tested for the coronavirus since the pandemic began. Friday’s daily positivity rate was 1.4%.
West Hollywood recorded 4 new cases; the cumulative total is 2,218 cases since the pandemic began. The city had no new deaths; the cumulative death total is 38 deaths.

- Beverly Hills – 6 new cases for a total of 2,582 cases and 35 deaths.
- Carthay neighborhood – 3 new cases for a total of 902 cases and 66 deaths.
- Century City – 2 new cases for a total of 589 cases and 12 deaths.
- Culver City – 4 new cases for a total of 2,136 cases and 96 deaths.
- Hollywood – 10 new cases for a total of 5,369 cases and 67 deaths.
- Melrose neighborhood – 7 new cases total of 8,008 cases and 201 deaths.
- Miracle Mile – 1 new case for a total of 948 cases and 15 deaths.
- Park La Brea – 2 new cases for a total of 594 cases and 1 death.
- Santa Monica – 3 new cases for a total of 4,552 cases and 161 deaths.
The Carthay neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles between the Beverly Hills city limits and Fairfax Avenue, with Beverly Boulevard as the northern border and Wilshire Boulevard as the southern border.
The Melrose neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles east of La Cienega and west of Vermont Avenue, between Santa Monica Boulevard on the north and Beverly Boulevard on the south.
