‘After four days with no reported increases, today the number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in West Hollywood jumped from 102 to 105. That means one of every 351 WeHo residents has been confirmed to have been infected.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reports 472 new confirmed infections as of noon today, bringing the countywide total to 10,496. There also have been 42 new deaths, bringing that count to a total of 402. That is the largest increase in new deaths so far.
“Twenty-four people who died were over the age of 65; 11 people who died were between the ages of 41 to 65 years old, and one person who died was between the ages of 18 to 40 years old,” the Health Department said in an announcement of today’s COVID-19 infection count. “Twenty-one people had underlying health conditions. Eleven people over the age of 65 and four people between the ages of 41 to 65 years old had no reported underlying health conditions.
The number of confirmed infections in Beverly Hills as of today is 78, up from 76 reported on Tuesday. The number of confirmed infections in Culver City remained at 34. Hollywood had three new infections, bringing the total to 124. There five newly confirmed infection in the Melrose neighborhood, bringing its total to 215.
The Little Armenia neighborhood in Los Angeles continues to have the highest infection rate, with today’s 47 infections meaning that 585.67 of every 100,000 residents is confirmed to be infected. With the Health Departments calculation of infections per one hundred thousand residents, the Crestview neighborhood in Los Angeles is the second most highly infected of the 335 cities and neighborhoods in Los Angeles County. Its 43 infections as of today means that 378.25 of 100,000 residents are infected. West Hollywood remains the third most highly infected community, with 284.16 residents per 100,000.
With the county’s expansion of testing sites, the number of people tested has grown to 67,000 as of today, with 11% of them testing positive. Those who want to be tested must first go online to see if they qualify and to book an appointment. Testing is limited to those who have symptoms of an infection, which include coughing, a fever, tiredness and, in severe cases, difficulty breathing. Same day or next-day testing is available only for those who are over 65 and/or have underlying healthcare conditions. A testing site adjacent to West Hollywood is on Alden Drive at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
There has been an apparent increase in the use of cloth face coverings, which keep the virus from landing on others when the wearer of a mask coughs, sneezes or even talks. As of midnight tonight, the Health Department will require that employees of businesses that are allowed to remain open because they provide essential services (grocery stores, pharmacies, etc.) wear cloth face coverings and that customers also wear them to reduce the possibility of transmitting the virus. The businesses most post physical distancing plans, alerting customers that they must stand at least six feet apart while waiting in checkout lines.
The Health Department’s “stay at home” order, now extended through May 15, requires the closure of all non-essential businesses. Exempt are grocery stores, pharmacies, hardware stores, medical marijuana dealers and a few others. The stay at home order is an effort to keep people who may be infected with the COVID-19 virus from interacting with others and infecting that.
The Health Department continues to remind people that the important steps one can take to protect yourself from the virus are to wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands, avoid being around sick people, practice physical distancing, especially by staying at home and wearing a face covering when out buying groceries or medicine or providing essential services.
If you are mildly sick, the Health Department advises that you stay home for at least seven days and until 72 hours after being fever- and symptom-free. Call your doctor if you are concerned and/or your symptoms worsen. Individuals who are elderly, have underlying health conditions or pregnant should consider contacting their providers earlier when they are sick.
