The West Hollywood City Council will convene on Monday to address a range of issues including public safety, sustainability, cultural initiatives, and social equity.
Public Safety Enhancements: Emergency Sirens and Fire Response
In response to the January 2025 Los Angeles County wildfires, the council will consider directing staff to evaluate the implementation of public safety sirens for emergency alerts. Initiated by Councilmembers John M. Erickson and Lauren Meister, the proposal seeks to supplement existing alert systems, drawing inspiration from neighboring cities like Beverly Hills, which installed an outdoor warning system in 2023, and Culver City, which uses Hi-Lo audible warnings on public safety vehicles.
Additionally, the council will receive an update on the city’s response to the regional fires. The draft report details West Hollywood’s coordinated efforts, including the WeHo Responds program, which facilitated aid for displaced residents and animals, and an urgency ordinance to ease housing restrictions for fire evacuees.
Sustainability: Electric Vehicle Infrastructure
A public hearing will address a proposed zone text amendment to designate Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Sites and EV Service Stations as primary uses in select commercial zones. Aligned with the city’s 2021 Climate Action and Adaptation Plan and state mandates like AB 970, the amendment aims to expand EV charging infrastructure to support California’s transition to zero-emission vehicles by 2035.
Cultural and Creative Initiatives: 2028 Games and Film Industry
The council will review plans for West Hollywood’s Creative Triennium: 2025-2028, a three-year arts and culture initiative leading up to the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The program, themed “Inventing Traditions,” includes art activations like a Discofoot dance-soccer event for the 2026 World Cup and a mural festival in 2027, alongside permanent artworks at the Aquatic and Recreation Center.
To bolster the local economy, the council will reaffirm West Hollywood’s status as a film-friendly city. Initiated by Councilmembers Danny Hang and Mayor Chelsea Lee Byers, the item directs the city’s Film Office to streamline permitting, promote incentives, support production-friendly legislation, and enhance industry partnerships.
Social Equity: Domestic Partnership Ordinance Update
The council will direct the City Attorney to explore amending the Domestic Partnership Ordinance to include polyamorous relationships, such as throuples. Initiated by Vice Mayor John Heilman, the proposal builds on a May 2025 nondiscrimination ordinance update and follows the model of Somerville, Massachusetts, which revised its ordinance in 2020-2021. The amendment seeks to modernize legal recognition for diverse family structures.
Just how diverse are these family structures going to get before we say we have gone too far with the Domestic Partnership Ordinance and it has become meaningless?
I’ll tell you exactly what I’ve told a number of people highly threatened by LGBTQ+ relationships, basically baseless Homo/Trans-phobia. First off they make up only a small % of the population with Trans People making up an even smaller subset of this population. Other people’s relationships NOT involving YOU pose absolutely NO threat to YOU. Sexual orientation has a strong genetic 🧬 bearing. Think about, if it were easily changed Straight Women would NOT exist for very long considering the FACT that the overwhelming majority of straight men are complete and total A__ Holes❗
